How to cancel and stop paying your TV licence

My aunt recently sold a very old plasma tv on gumtree for way more than I would think any reasonable person would pay. You could actually buy a new LCD tv for the same price. It sold within a day. The guy who bought it said he didn't want to pay for a tv license. It just makes me wonder how many people who buy brand new TVs actually use it to watch SABC channels. I so wished that they would shift TV Licensing to the new digital TV set-top box decoder thing instead of the actual TV.

Does your aunt still have a TV? If she does she is till liable for a licence anyway. IF not then she will still find herself paying for the licence on the sold TV ........

STBs and decoders, all have tuners in them capable of receiving a broadcast signal and must be licensed. ( Except of course If you get a subsidised STB, then you do not need to pay a licence fee). Until ALL TVs have ALL tuners removed, TVs will have to be licensed.

but what if you use a monitor with the STB which has a tuner in them? Do you still need a tv licence, or STB licence?

Sorry this was a joke i found online, so just thought it was funny. Actually, it pretty much can sum up this country anyway.

I was wondering when the sabc grew the balls required to take someone to court, since the law and their [legally untested] bullying propaganda are so different.

There is no difference the licence is the same. It is about the device with a tuner in it. Of course, there is another can of worms here, all those out there with a tuner card in a PC are also supposed to have a "TV licence"

I would rather pay R250+ to get the tuner in my TV removed, if it were possible.

Then again, I'd rather pay R250+ per year to whoever removed it, to prevent them from surprise installing it so SABC can sue me.

Anything is better than giving the SABC money.

In the good olde days, its was SAPO's responsibility to "police" this with a squad of TV licence Inspectors, briefly transferred to Telkom, who then dumped the problem on the Post Office ... Not sure when the whole matter became the SABCs problem. What I do know is the pain my daughter went through when she "sold" her TV without sorting out this matter .....

In those days, "your file" listed very radio, TV , VCR, and decoder, and IF you were inspected, the inspector wanted to see every single one of those devices together with your licence. If you had more devices than listed you were in trouble. If you had less than those listed you were in trouble ......

I wonder why OUTA has not told the public to stop paying tv Licenses as the current situation at the SABC.

I saw the OUTA guy with a placard outside the SABC recently? Or was I imagining it?

It should be noted that a TV licence cannot be cancelled while there is money outstanding on an account.
That applies even when it has been taken out fraudulently in someone else's name. It's impossible to cancel and the SABC does not care that someone else took out the license.

Only for people who don't understand what bail is.

Until VVM attorneys get called in....
Well my mother has been threatened with imminent legal action for years

If you buy a second TV, can you use the same TV license? Or do you need to pay for a second license?

I've never had a TV, so I don't know how this works. Might be the best option to never get a license to start with.

Legally, no supplier is allowed to sell you a TV without you presenting a licence or agreeing to them applying and getting one for you.

The grey area is purchasing TVs on line or second-hand. The purchaser will only be for the high jump if an inspector shows up and demands to see a licence.

Who is actually watching SABC or DSTV?
Use your time and money for something else. Lots of stuff you can choose from.
The SABC could not explain where the license money went to during an audit. This was swept under the carpet.
No money for Hlaudi seems like a very hood idea.

I dont understand why we should have inspection every year and send proof the Sabc that is just wrong it should be done once off and cancelled.
Problem with that, is that you cancel once off. Then go and buy another tv 2nd hand, and you are good to go.

Oh please, what nonsense.

You really seem like a SABC shill.

Nope, not nonsense. I know of 2 cases where persons with outstanding TV licence payments had to be sorted out by the executors of the Estate. --------

I really do not care what you think take the info and use it or lose it, as you please.
