Nope, not nonsense. I know of 2 cases where persons with outstanding TV licence payments had to be sorted out by the executors of the Estate. --------

I really do not care what you think take the info and use it or lose it, as you please.
Prove it.

My Mother in Law is over 90 and recently gave her TV to her grand daughter. To comply with the SABC requirements, a virtually bed ridden 90 year old must be trucked of to a SAPS office to declare on an affidavit that she has given her TV away.

Or do I just ignore the renewals from now on?

The article explains what has to be done. According to the previous poster you can ignore the renewals ...... just as you please.

It is a stupid process but get it sorted out by someone with a Power of Attorney if need be.

According to the SABC shill the executor of her estate will contact 1,000's of organisations to make sure she doesn't owe then money. You know, like the traffic departments, SABC etc.

Yeah right.

Been paying TV licence annually since 1976. For the last 5 years, someone from the SABC has called me regularly and tells me my licence is in arrear. I quote the licence number. No, that is not yours the (usually a woman) says. I have sent emails with certified copies of the correct licence, posted by registered mail (it took them 3 months to collect it) but it makes no difference. When I ask them who the licence I have is supposed to belong to, I am told this is confidential info. I invited them to take me to court, but this did not materialise either

My only trick that has worked to some extent, is when they phone, I say, "I am the housekeeper, Mr X is away in France on holiday for 4 months". This postpones the next call for a while. I vary the countries when I remember

Legally, no supplier is allowed to sell you a TV without you presenting a licence or agreeing to them applying and getting one for you.

The grey area is purchasing TVs on line or second-hand. The purchaser will only be for the high jump if an inspector shows up and demands to see a licence.

That much I understood.

I'm asking: If I have a TV licence and one TV, can I use the same license to buy a second TV? Then give that TV to someone withouth a TV license, who is not on the SABC's record to start with? How would the SABC ever know? If this can be done, why would young people make the error of getting a TV license in the first place?

As an aside, LG and Samsung should really start to manufacture TV's without the tuner component. I want to be able to buy a giant monitor, basically, without the SABC having anything to do with it.

They do. Typically used for digital signage. Samsung LFD for example. It's what I have.

Great to hear, I didn't know about this option. Do they have a wide range available at various local stores? Makro, DionWired, HiFi Corp etc.

I don't want to have to pay a premium or jump through hoops.

My aunt recently sold a very old plasma tv on gumtree for way more than I would think any reasonable person would pay. You could actually buy a new LCD tv for the same price. It sold within a day.

Or it was postman pot.

I can actually speak to this, I had purchased a tv for my grandmother many years ago, and when she died, sabc was all over it saying she didn't have license etc and owed for x years, they were like the plague. Its like they work through obituaries or something. I eventually found the old c/card slip with my sig and receipt(luckily I keep those things for warranties etc) which executor then used to prove it was mine purchased on my license, so they got nothing. It didn't keep them for years after sending invoices and threatening letters, they seem to have given up now, I guess trying to threaten a dead woman became rather pointless after some time. This was like 10 years ago, don't know if they are still doing it. I do wonder though how many people pay their dead relatives tv license.

Before I go about ranting how incompetent South Africa is, I just want to check. IS TV licences only a SA thing?
