Ive tried just about everything to set up the 6230i email to check my gmail & ive never got it to work..even once. So i found this app called mobile mail and it keeps showing me the SAME emails all the time..i have no idea why. My latest resort is to use opera mini but on the gmail login screen it says 'the connection is not secure' so i really need a reliable way to check my gmail acc. Anyone..

Calico182 I can but I'd prefer to use the built-in email checking thing on the phone...guess it's just my preference. :)

nic777 I tried following post #20 in the thread you mentioned..heres my settings, please tell me if anything needs to be changed

Account name : Gmail
My name : ****
E-mail address : ****@gmail.com
Include Signature : No
Reply-to address : blank
SMTP secure login : blank
SMTP user name : blank
SMTP password : blank
Outgoing SMTP server : smtp.gmail.com
Outgoing SMTP port : 465
Use preferres access point : yes
Incoming server type : POP3

Incoming mail settings are :

Retrieve e-mails : 30
POP3 secure login : Disabled
POP3 user name : blank
POP3 password : blank
Incoming POP3 server : pop.gmail.com
Incoming POP3 port : 995
Use preferred access point : yes

Now when I open the Email thing it says "Email settings are incomplete".
I click Retrieve and it says 'Connecting' for about a second and then 'Network login problem. Check account settings.'
The settings in bold I'm not too sure about..

Just check in your phone settings what your "Preferred access point" is - is it set to MMS or GPRS?

If set to MMS, go back to your email settings and change "Use preferred access point : yes" to no

Also, if sending doesn't work, then you might have to use vodacoms SMTP server - but leave it for now and lets get retrieving emails works.

My preferred access point is the GPRS one. Under incoming mail settings I changed the Use preferred access point to no and it still gives the same error.

feo, i've got a 6230i as well, and i'm pretty sure that the problem lies with gmail requiring a ssl connection, which, although it's supposedly supported by the phone, i don't think it really is.

i've been able to send/receive mail from a different account that does not need ssl, so i know the mail client does work, just not with gmail. funny thing is that i can send mail using my gmail account, just not receive... *shrugs*

btw, the settings you posted would probably not work anyway, as i think you need to specify the username and password for both the smtp and pop servers as well...

Well when I phoned 155 for help I remember asking the lady if anything needs to be put in the smtp/pop user/pass fields and she said I can leave it blank...Has anyone with a 6230i got gmail to work with the phone's email client? The gmail account is my normal day to day one and I'd really like it to work with the built-in client.

are you sure she didn't think you were asking about a vodacom email account?
you have to specify the username and password, just like you would with outlook, thunderbird, etc

i have 'smtp secure login' set to 'login', and i am able to send mail. there's no such option for 'pop3 secure login' though, only 'apop', which is why i think nobody has been able to receive mail with the 6230i. i've made peace with it, but if you find a way, i'll be all ears ;)

Some google searches make this seem impossible. Guess the search for a new phone or another email client is in the works

o_O

http://www.filesaveas.com/connect.html#gmail
# Series 60 phones (Nokia 6600, 7610, 3650, etc): Note that the built-in email application doesn't support SSL, and so it's not possible to get at your Gmail using Messaging. However, ProfiMail from www.handango.com , is available, and does support Gmail access (as per the screenshot)

But wait!

http://tarek.typepad.com/mobtech/2004/11/gmail_on_your_m.html#native
UPDATE: This problem seems to only effect the 6600 and the N-Gage. The Native E-mail Clients for both the 7610 and the 6630 work as long as you put "SECURITY" to "ON" which enables the SSL

oh no

sending mail

If you're on vodacom the smtp settings are smtp.vodacom.co.za with no username / password. I was trying to use a different smtp server previously and kept on getting an error "the recipient does not exist". I only just tried the vodacom settings - the mail sent succesfully 5 mins ago... but I have not received it yet...

if you use gmail, don't you make use of the pop accessibility to download it to your preferred email client, rather than having to go to the website every time? same thing... ;)

the WAPsite? you mean m.gmail.com?

And I've searched google up and down and it seems that some people have problems with the 6230i's email client and some don't..I'll send it for a firmware upgrade and see if the SSL thing has been sorted out coz apparently this phone DOES support SSL which I've heard that gmail requires? Right now I just check mail from Opera Mini...

i got a firmware upgrade for that exact reason, but unfortunately, i'm still having the same problems with gmail (i'm currently on v.3.70)

and yes, the phone does have an option to use ssl (from within the email app, go to options -> extra settings -> ssl-connection -> secure), but even with that enabled, i still can't receive mail from my gmail account

just thought i'd give you a 'heads up' :)

Well I have v3.30 firmware :( and theres no option like that in extra settings. Does anybody have the international contact details for Nokia customer care because I thought maybe I'd drop them a mail and see why us 6230i users cant receive mail...
