Hi

Please excuse me if this question have been addressed already, but I really don't have time to go through every single post to confirm first.

I have a ipaq HP 6500 with the usual cellphone capabilities and mobile windows 2003.

I also have a vodamail 3G mobile internet card at home (still waiting for my card to be converted to the new one) and also have a contract blackberry phone.

I basically bought the ipaq to be able to read e-books (in case anyone is interested in my sob story  ) but decided that it would be cool if I can check my vodamail from my new ipaq.

What I've done is to take the sim card from my blackberry (also vodacom service) and put it in my ipaq.

Under my settings I created a new ISP connection which I called My connection. As modem I selected Cellular Line (GPRS) and my access point I made internet. The user name, password and domain I left blank.

After that I went to messaging (e-mail) and I created a new account which I called pop3. As e-mail address I put down one of my aliases (not the main one provided by vodamail the "cellphone"@vodamail.co.za one and yes my alias works perfectly otherwise). Under your name I put down the name that will appear on all e-mail addresses. Under user name I put down 278(rest of cellphone number of sim card from vodamail) - as was instructed by vodamail and which is used on my notebook at home. Under password I put down my password which is used to log onto the vodamail website. Under account type I selected pop3 and the name I left as pop3. Under incoming mail I have pop3.vodamail.co.za. Under outgoing mail I have smtp.vodamail.co.za. The domain I left blank.

I haven't selected any DNS servers, ip addresses etc. Additionally I confirmed all my settings with vodacom and HP's helpdesk but according to them they can't understand why I can check my mail etc. and I'm each time instructed to contact the other Call Centre because the problem should lay with them.

Also I am able to connect in my mail but it keeps on asking for a user name and password and refuse to go further than that. I can also go on internet without any hazle therefore the first part of my connection is definitely right.

Will appreciate it if someone can provide me with the following answers:

1. Can I definitely check my vodamail from my ipaq. According to all the various sources I dealt with I should be able to.
2. What the "Hell" (excuse my french) am I doing wrong otherwise?
3. If I can check vodamail do you think I should be able to check my blackberry mail from the ipaq too or is that pushing my luck?

Thank you very much in advance.

Am I being stupid with my question?

Okay...I am being paranoid hence this reply to my own thread.

I've noticed that some people have read it but nobody replied yet and therefore I need to ask...

Am I being stupid in wanting to set up a mail account on my ipaq. Was my question stupid.

Or is it just a matter of people not knowing the answer yet and I'm being impatient (as usual).

Also if my query is not possible at all don't worry about being nice to me. Just say plain "sorry not possible". At least that I way I'll know then.

Thanks in advance.

1. YES you can
2. Dont know! are u using the correct user name? check that user name includes @vodamail or not...i dont know whether it should or not...
also check your caps lock in user name and password and numlock etc
3. AFAIK there is no Blackberry Connect software for Ipaq so u cant check it. I may be wrong.

If it was as easy as that, :)

I should think just add the appropriate e-mail info to your e-mail software.

Thanks for responding to my query. Only problem is I setup the mail account (same way as with my vodamail) but it doesn't work.

Somebody suggested that because blackberry technology works on push e-mail technology I might not be able to check the e-mail from my blackberry account from my pocket pc.

Just want to add something to this thread...

If anybody is interested in knowing how I set up the e-mail account on a ipaq I'll be more than willing to assist.

Just PM me or mail me at nalizag@vodamail.co.za.

Least I can do after I've struggled myself so long.

You can always do a post on how you got it working and I can add it to the FAQ.

Where do I post it to? This thread or somewhere else?

This thread is fine.

Right here goes...can someone please start the drums rolling, :D

The device that I have is a HP Ipaq 6515d with pocket pc and cellphone capabilities. The operating system is windows mobile 2003. It also has built-in e-mail facillities and GPRS facilities. I also took a normal sim card and inserted it into the pocket PC. Please don't be so dumb as to insert the sim card from your 3G mobile internet card in your pocket pc - this is not necessary!

Now I'm sure the steps will also work for other pocket pc's with cellphone capabilities and built in e-mail facilities.

The purpose of the next steps is to explain how to check the e-mail from the vodamail e-mail account (3G mobile internet card) from your pocket pc:

First part of steps that needs to be done - setting up of "modem":

Make sure that the option "on flight mode is not selected". If you are not sure where to find this option check your manual.
What I can recommend is to check at the top of your screen. There should be an icon that appears similar to the status bars on a cellphone. If you select this one of the options that will appear is "Turn on flight mode". DO NOT CHANGE THIS!

Next go Start, Settings, Connections.
Under Connections look for a heading that says My ISP.
Under this heading look for an option that says Add a new modem connection - select it.
Where it asked for a name for your connection you can type anything.
Under the option Select a modem choose Cellular Line (GPRS).
Click Next.
Under access point name type in internet.
Click Next.
Next it will ask for user name, password etc. - leave this blank.
Click on Finish.

Congratulation you've successfully set up your "modem".

Now for the second part of the "exercise":

Click on Start, Settings, Messaging.
Click on Accounts, New Account.
Where it asks for an e-mail address type in your main one or any of your aliases.
Click on Next.
It will say Connecting.
Wait until it says Completed.
Click on Next.
Where it asks for your name type in the name that will appear on all the e-mails that you sent out.
Where it asks for user name type in the user id provided by your internet service provider. In the case of vodamail it will be the cellphone number of the sim card and will start with 278(rest of number and start 0 is left out) e.g. 27824617108.
Make sure your password is correct.
Select tick box Save Password and then click on Next.
Where it asks for Account type make your selection. Note that most internet service providers including vodamail makes use of POP3.
Next to name type in the name for your account - any will do. Tip: You can't change this later on.
Where it asks for incoming mail type in the name of the incoming mail server from your service provider. For vodamail this is pop3.vodamail.co.za.
Where it asks for outgoing mail type in the name of the outgoing mail server from your service provider. For vodamail this is smtp.vodamail.co.za
Leave domain empty.
Click on Finish.
You will get a message asking you as to whether you want to download messages now - say no.

Third part of this exercise:
Switch off your pocket PC.
Remove battery.
Remove sim card.
Put everything back in again.
No - I'm not trying to be funny, this is called a hard boot.
Switch on your pocket PC.
Go back to e-mail.
Click on the connect or Send/receive button.
E-mails should now start to download.
