How to 'clean' and old video tape

I have an old VHS tape with some shows i would like to put on DVD, the problem is that every time i start the video the head of the video player gets dirty.

Is there anyway to clean the video tape.

Someone told me to take a cloth with 100% alcohol and wipe the film inside of the video tape?

I would not use any solvents... just a plain old clean rag.

And you need to clean the VCR's heads as well. For this you can use a mild solvent and an earbud.
