So I requested the option to mount my 2.4ghz antenna to join CTWUG. I know I know you work on 5.8ghz mostly, but I pickup Pilgrim's AP on 2.4ghz.

They sent the following and I replied - anything you think I can add to persuade them?

Hi,

The trustees would like to know exactly what kind of antenna tv aerial
you wish to put up and tust it will be on the roof. If not, kindly
advise exactly where you wish to place the aerial.

Trust to hear from you shortly. You can go directly back to Dr Bob (name changed) if you so wish - (see his e-mail above).

Thanking you.

Kind regards
Property Administrator

My follow up:
--

Hi,

It is a wireless aerial for access to the Cape Town Wireless User's
Group - CTWUG, are the biggest single free and permanent wireless user
group in the Western Cape.

It would be used to access this network and share and support others
through this. Their website is http://www.ctwug.za.net/

The antenna in question is the one seen here
http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=49_38&products_id=284
It is 0.6m x 0.9m.

I would look to mount this somewhere on the roof - probably where an
existing mast is so that I would not have to mount one and disrupt
anyone's views. It would be pointing towards the Rondebosch Common for
access to the network above. Clear line of site would be best as this
acts like a radio in terms of signal.

Thanks and Regards,
J

I don't see why it would be an issue, however you know how anal those old complex folk can be.

Are you renting or something? I did not know you need permission to put up an aerial on your roof? Do you need permission to mount a dish too? (assuming you're the owner)

In either case, i would prolly just have said it's a TV Aerial and done ? ;) Is there any reason why one can possibly allow a satelite [DSTV] dish on a roof and not this?

Trustees = Body Corporate and thus a sectional title complex. You can't modify the exterior of your unit (modifying = putting up an aerial or dish or a fluffy bunny stuffed toy on a stick).

Most body corporates aren't that bad - My advice is to send them a pic of the antennae with dimensions and a photo of where you want to put it. The less obvious the antenna and placing the antenna where its not visible from common property will = better chance of approval

Do not offer to share a pole with anybody else. Co-ownership is a nightmare of note. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Otherwise, the answer you have is good.

Yes, i know, but they'll be walking a fine line [in rejecting this] if even one person in the complex have a big dish on their roof ;). Sure maybe you'd have to go through red-tape, but i don't see any reasoning as to how a body corporate can disallow it UNLESS they offer it via an alternative means (cables / connection points in the houses / they install and maintain it themselves etc etc)

Should have said as little as possible...the more info you give the more you make them worry.

My brother owns the flat, so I don't see the issue. That being said its a really old complex, 60's in design etc and the people in control seem to be the oldies. It is a small complex - about 9 flats.

Depends how far you are from pilgrim as to what antenna to install
What about purchasing one of the Ubiquiti Nanostations 2 or 5
Found this photo of an installation in the UK. Give it a coat of paint
the Body Corporate will not even notice something on your roof, having
a chimney makes it easier to install

I installed a Nanostation 2 in a pine tree connecting at full speed
11 Mb/s in 802.11b to a high site 10km away Clear LOS

Body corporates are nightmares. I secretly suspect they all work at home affairs because they just love procedure, red tape and bureaucracy. In my old complex you needed 'written permission' after a 'formal request' to install a satellite dish which you could be 'asked to take down in the future.' I hope all sectional titles aren't like this!

EDIT: Forgot to answer the question! Um, I think you have to flatter these people, that works best. It's harder to say no to a friend than a stranger. If you have a friend on the body corporate ask him, preface it by bringing a (thoughtful) gift/inviting him to a braai. At my old complex we were allowed three dogs (rule said two) because we were friends with the chairman. Might not work everywhere but it's worth a shot!

if other people are allowed to put up dishes and TV antennas you are allowed to put up your wifi antenna. This is 2009, technology has advanced, this is the new thing.

Lol, sometimes you just cannot win. When I stayed in Wynberg the old lady in charge was a bit insane. I asked her if I could put up an antenna and she proceeded to point out all the tv antennas and dstv dishes on the houses surrounding the complex. Then she told me this huge hush hush secret of how "those things" actually kill us.

jsheed_sa, please contact me, I really want to know where abouts you live. Then we can make some plans for the link :D

Bodycorp approved the idea of an antenna. Just need to go play on the roof now and take some pics then Pilgrim will try and take a look when it suits him.

Thanks for all the help CTWUG , you've been awesome so far. Big up to Pilgrim for his patience with me asking stupid questions.

Thanks
J

I see these antennas everywhere in complexes where I stay. I cannot see that this would be problem. Tell them it's a data antenna, and put it up.
