How to diagnose problems with Telkom ADSL?

I have a 4mbps ADSL, and a 4mbps uncapped ISP account, both through Telkom. I'm in Pinelands, Cape Town.

The internet service has been working very well since it was installed a couple of months ago, and I was able to watch online videos, listen to online radio, and download large files like app updates. However the quality of the service started degrading around the beginning of September, becoming noticeably slower, and less usable.

At first the speed drop was only noticeable in the evenings, and only occasionally was it slow. This has progressively worsened until now the connection is all but useless. Just posting on this forum required multiple attempts at reloading the page.

The connection is not only slow, but also seems to be losing data. Web pages seem to load half way, youtube videos load partially and then stop.

The connection is not consistently bad. There are periods where it seems to be working again, and then it goes slow again. The bad periods are becoming longer, and the good times becoming shorter.

I have tried the ookla speed tests, but the results seem inconsistent. Sometimes it shows 3mbps throughput. At the moment the speed test page does not even load. Previously when it did load it indicated 600kbps download, and 400kbps upload. At that time even the Telkom web site wasn't loading, putting the speed closer to 0kbps in reality.

I have tried resetting the router, which used to to result in decent performance for a few hours before needing another reset. Doing this now has no effect, and when the connection comes back the performance is still bad.

I also tried changing the SSID and password on the router, in case someone else was using the wifi. This had no effect so unless there is some other intrusion I'm unaware of, the connection is only being used by me.

I also ran a virus scanner, just to be sure. However, the performance is the same no matter if it's on the Mac, Windows laptop, iPad, iPhone, or Android phone or tablet. They all perform poorly.

I have reported the fault to Telkom, but based on the dearth of scorn on MyBroadband and other places, I have little confidence that they will actually respond effectively.

So the basic question is, what to do now?

I have considered:
- Buying a new router - will this help?
- Replacing the filter and connection wire with a known good one.
- Switch ISP, but to who? Will an ISP help if the problem is with Telkom's infrastructure?
- Upgrade to 10mbps - which is fine, if the problem is throughput and not infrastructure.
- How can I tell if the problem is congestion, and if it is, what can be done about it?

Lastly, in searching for clues, I came across many other posts which describe similar problems, great service at first which steadily declines until being unusable. Is this a tactic used by Telkom, or is it just a very common problem?

Yes, go to crystalweb.co.za and load up live chat. We will use a test account to assist you in diagnosing the fault - whether you sign up or not and if it is a Telkom problem provide you with some data to push the escalation case etc ... forward.

I had similiar issues, what is your connection like on the Telkom guest account? Try a speedtest on that account via the SAIX website :)

Ask them to reset the port. This works 60% of the time

You can sign up for the free accounts with WebAfrica, Axxess and Afrihost.
See if these perform any better than the current account.

WebAfrica Free: http://www.webafrica.co.za/home/adsl/ Look for the 2GB, 0 cost Order Now button.
Axxess Free: https://www.axxess.co.za/freegig.php
Afrihost Free:https://clientzone.afrihost.com/get-connected/4 Select the 1 GB, R0 pm option.

Also, run Zertop's Tools and report results in those these threads;

Zertop's "Help me fix my internet" report tool Thread
Zertop's "Is it my Line" Report Tool

Perhaps also post your Modem line stats as well... to see if there is anything glaringly obvious.

Once you have done the above, and if it does indeed point to a Telkom issue... give TelkomZA here a PM or post in this thread;

Good Luck!

Lol so you guys all responded before the page had even reloaded here, how awesome is that!

@Paul - I'm using the online chat now - will see how it goes with the connection.

@SeanJ - Thanks for the tip. I typed in SAIX into the address bar, ended up on a dodgy looking Telkom page with an icon for a speed test and ended up here: http://capetown.spdtst.saix.net, which looks similar to the ookla speed test. I'm guessing this is the right place. It never asked for a login so I'm not sure if it's guest account or not.

This is what I got:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 36 kbps (4.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 10 kbps (1.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 6961 ms

@chrisc4290 - Sounds good. Do I just do that through the Telkom support site? Or is there another channel?

Telkom is borked today, for me at any rate.

If you have 7 days spare in your life, you could read through this thread:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/596707-Telkom-Internet-Uncapped-User-Feedback-(Pt2)

You may well be enlightened :)

Telkom Internet has been up and down for a while now. My patience is running out though, as up till now I've been pretty happy and willing to overlook intermittent issues, but they seem to be getting more and more frequent.

Just for the curious - running the SAIX speed test with an account through crystal web as recommended by Paul:

Download Speed: 3525 kbps (440.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 420 kbps (52.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 19 ms

Wow, what fantastic service from CrystalWeb. So I did the live chat, they gave me an account to test with, which gave an instant speed boost - see the numbers before and after.

They said there is some congestion on the exchange, hence not getting full 4mbps, but I'm happy enough with the 3.4mbps I am getting, which is much better than it was.

As it turns out the problem is with the line, but more like a problem with Telkom's ISP, or I may have faulty hardware which could have caused some issue with the account. I'll report the problem to Telkom, but I'm sticking with Crystal just for the amazing service.

Really great service, thanks guys!
