My son has since started working and has his own car, but his father doesn't want to take the car back. He said our son can sell the car, he will sign all papers required, but doesn't want to help. He seems to have lost the registration papers and doesn't know when the last time was that the license was renewed. How can I find out what the outstanding fines and registration costs are and if the car is even registered in his name? I do have his ID number and the vehicle's information on the license disk of course.

How to find info about vehicle

Take the vehicle register number - it's printed on the disc - into your nearest post or licensing office, and ask them to check for you. You're not the registered owner, so they're not obligated to help you, but most counter staff likely wouldn't care. If it comes to drawing duplicate papers on a car though, only the registered owner can do so. If it reaches that point your ex would have to request them.
