Take the door off, take it to builders and let them sort it out for you.

Option two - leave the door as is and when anybody gives you **** just point to the door and give them a sly smile.

Okay. You can plug up the hole with about a kilo of Polyfiller, which will cause a slump.

What you should do is add some solid material, like an extra piece of ply wood or maybe stuff the hole with newspaper then apply Polyfiller.

Agree with fill with solid material but, not newspaper..

Hide it by sticking a poster over it.

Replace it. And sommer get a proper wood fire door while you are at it so you get some sound insulation out of the deal too.

However, don't consider doing this yourself....I did and it was one of the most drawn out unnecessary jobs ever needing doing and I see why handyman types charge so much to do it.

You might be able to claim it from insurance.

Honestly I wouldnt take most of the advice from above other than replacing the door. You do get something called Quikwood. Basically its an epoxy style putty that if you mix together becomes like wood. Cut and only use the bit you need. Try keep as flat together as possible. Sand down the patched spot and cover with paint. Thats your best bet. Polyfilla and even woodfiller just wont work. This stuff hardens to a rock hardness state. Works well

You will find it at Brights or Builders or well most hardware stores

Thanks for the tip..

As for using Polyfilla and doing what most people do... it will likely work fine and look the same as a new door without the risk of running into other issues.

You learn to apply in layers, get it to stick instead of letting it shrink and fall out, minimise sanding... either way has to paint a door (foam roller).

If you don't learn to think carefully about when the most direct approach is better, the effort and cost could easily double with the same end result.
