Best ways to fix Uber in South Africa

Appointing drivers as full-time employees, mandating defensive driver training, and enforcing standards through random and unscheduled checks could help Uber improve its service to regain the trust of the South African public.

That is according to Driving.co.za founder and managing director Rob Handfield-Jones, a road safety and driver training expert.

And fluency in Afrikaans?

I'm more concerned about the dire state and roadworthiness of the vehicles.

The real issue is not Uber who transports a few hundred thousand people a year. The mini bus taxi industry transports tens of millions of people per year and is diabolical. This director of driving.co.za should rather focus his energies and comments to help fix that crisis of public transport rather than worry about the privileged few who use e-hailing.

This director should go to Santaco and request all taxi bosses to formally employ their drivers, account for revenue and pay tax, provide driver training and ask to subject their taxis to frequent evaluations. Of course he won’t do that though but rather give fodder to mybroadband.

People need to get their priorities right in SA and focus on the real issues at hand.
