How to get a firearm licence in South Africa - and the battle against new gun laws

The unknown suspects took 3× R5 rifles with 2 magazines and 37 rounds ammunition, 2x 12bore pump actions with 103 rounds of ammunition, 8x9mm pistols with 5 magazines and 98 rounds of ammunition.

If this is representative of the weapons and ammunition levels of the average police station it is no wonder that civilians had to supply the police with ammo during the unrest. Or these criminals get their mags and ammo somewhere else.

For the first time in my life, I am considering a firearm for self defence, but I am terrified of the accidental death aspect.

Any thoughts on less lethal options like pepper ball guns. The ones that look close enough to chase away a knife armed opponent and will give you a fighting chance against a group of home invaders/looters

Whatever - there are no quick fixes, becoming adept, at unarmed combat, use of edged weapons or fire-arms, takes a lot of time and dedication.

Not a buy , plug and play situation.

If you were able to learn how to safely operate a car, you can learn how to safely operate a firearm as well.

The problem I have with pepper and paintball options, for self defence, is that gives you a false sense of security. No attacking criminal stands after taking 3 9mm hollow-points.

You'll learn of all the defensive, and avoidance, measures you'll need to take long before you need to draw you firearm. And when you have to, knowing how to proficiently, and, more importantly, confidently use a firearm for self defence under duress, when all other options off the table, will offer you way more in the end.

To be fair, I almost ticked that as well. The way DearSA set up the questionnaire may catch out some people, especially if they aren't native English speakers.

The 2nd amendment explains it all, if you understand it.

The American Constitution, that is.

Agreed with all points, bar the one in blue. Stopping power is overwhelmingly dictated by shot placement, and trumps calibre, type and number.

Not attacking you, just wondering why you are anti-gun?
A gun's sole purpose is for killing (guns weren't invented for sport shooting, before someone brings that up), or the threat of killing.

I detest bikers but I am not anti-bike. Would love to own a bike myself.
I detest Apple products and their fans, but Im not against people getting it.

People are also getting stabbed but Im not anti-knife. Got a few in my collection.

A bike has utility in that it can get you places. Apple products serve whatever their intended purpose.

Knives are similar to guns in that they can be very dangerous but they also have utility, such as in the kitchen or workshop. Few things can kill someone as quickly as a gun can, and they simply have no utility beyond their intended purpose. I can't use a gun to make a sandwich for example.

I don't see the issue...?

This makes it sound so easy to get a firearm. It's a looooooong, tedious process (doing it the right way obviously).
I sleep much calmer at night knowing I can defend myself if the need arises.

So you would have been the type of guy that would have wanted to ban swords if you had lived in those times.....
