I have a linux box that I would like to install windows 7 on. I see there are people selling windows 7 Keys but I am worried that they are MSDN keys which can be deactivated in the future or just plain illegal.

As this is for personal use is there away to get legal OEM or retail keys for relative low cost?

issue is the license is tied down to the chassis using the COA, if you can find one which has never been attached to the chassis that would be the most Legal way of doing it.

That only applies to OEM/DSP keys. If he can find a retail key, he should be OK.
Just make sure you are getting the box packaging as well that clearly shows that it is a retail version and has the key attached.
(Even then it is a hit and miss affair as whoever is selling it may not have completely uninstalled it from any other computers it was used on).

Matrix still sells Windows 7. Best to buy a fresh copy.

I know Tarsus had some Win 7 Pro DSP in stock...
Not sure if they still have, give them a call and they can refer you to a reseller.
