The lady that does our business payroll are busy submitting our employee's irp's this week. There are now quite a few employees which already left us, who's irp5's must also be submitted. Now due to the nature of some employees, I know they will not take any effort to find out what their income tax number is, I mean they have left us, why so why worry.

It is easy to get the current employees and the future ones to get it, even before they can get a job, they must give me that number.

The lady gave me the number the employees must phone to get the number, and apparently I can't do it on their behalf. Is this how it is? Or are there a way for me to get this numbers? Another problem is, many of the people dont stay at one address long, so how would anyone remember where they stayed when they were registered with sars, and apparently they have to tell their address, phone number and id number before a number will be given to them.

Thanks.

The individual needs to phone SARS call centre (0800 00 7277) and upon verification of personal particulars on record with SARS, they will then furnish the individual with their Income Tax Number.

You as the Employer can not phone SARS and request any Employees’ Income Tax Numbers.

This is odd, since somehow my employer got ahold of my income tax number at my previous job, without me even knowing it.

Okay but what can I do if the employee wont care to give it to me? Because I know that this will be the case.

Thats the theory anyway. In practice many things are possible.

I'd suggest just give it a shot. Contact SARS & explain your problem. Don't lie. You might just be surprised - I know I was.

I phoned them today, no luck. Then I tried my luck with the employees. What a disgrace. Most of them dont even bother to answer her phone. The other lady said she wont give it to me, the other one asked if she will get money back if she give it to me(she didn't even got a taxable salary). So yes, only got the current 3 employees which still work with us, but only when I offered to phone, and let them speak.

Some people just wouldn't care a damn.

The Easyfile software allows for submission of IRP5/EMP501 without income tax numbers. After submission, SARS will send the income tax number to you via the easyfile software.

This is no longer the employees' problem. The employer should have sorted this out with the initial hiring / induction process.

It is the responsibility of the employer to insure they have all the required information of their staff. Get it on the same day the employee starts to work for the company.

This will be done from now on, I didn't know of is. The lady who does our payroll each month do it free-lance, and didn't inform us. But as said, it will be done from now on.
