How To: Get Cell C HSDPA USB dongle to work in Ubuntu

If you run Ubuntu and have the Cell C HSDPA USB Dongle you can get it to work with the steps outlined in this article. It's written for the 10.4 LTS but also works with the newer versions of Ubuntu.

Strange. Last time I had to install a USB dongle. I plugged it in. Ubuntu picked it up. Asked what network I use, so I chose CellC... and that was that. It just worked.

From my own experience, the most common problem with new or "exotic" USB modems is that the device does not exist in /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/ and hence the device remains registered as a storage device. Once you've updated usb_modeswitch and restarted udev, the device gets ejected and then ModemManager and NetworkManager can do their thing.

I would expect Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to have an outdated usb_modeswitch device list, but updating usb_modeswitch is probably a good place to start on any distro if you're having issues with the USB dongle not being picked up as a modem.
