Don't know where that got that price from. they are selling on dx.com for R5300. Was it a SA site? Can't see how they would be available here in SA for less than that. Normally they would charge 150-200% of the the Chinese price.

I've bought from them a few times. They are a bit slow as it comes through SAPO. You may or may not need to pay duty. Most times you don't.

How much would the duty be on a R5300 phone?

They seldom put the real value on the package. Normally they will declare it as a "gadget" @ US$10. I've never been charged duty on a phone. For a R1200 tv box I paid R60 once. Had a big SARS sticker on the package.

Oh that sounds good. How long do they usually take?

I see that a lot of people complain that dx.con loses their parcels or get it stuck at customs. Is there any other way to bring phones in ?

Everything needs to go through Jhb customs (is there also one in CT?) 99% of the time that is where the delay is. Suppliers can take 3 to 7 business days to dispatch and it takes upto a week to get to Jhb. Then it's hurry up and wait.

If you look carefully there is often discounted TNT or DHL. I paid R60 for DHL once. Then you will have it in less than 2 weeks. Otherwise bank on 4 - 6 weeks. Sometimes its cheaper to order 2 phones than 1 as the cost of the courier drops. I bought 3 cheap IP67 phones for R300 each. TNT on one was R200+, for 2 was R145 and 3 was R80.

Look out for sites like geekbuying they offer insurance for about R27 on a phone. If it gets lost they send another.

The quickest way is by courier, but they will charge a handling fee if duty is to be paid. Post is the slowest but seldom attracts duty or duty is very low. I think the SAPO charges about R20 handling fee.

Buying from China is cheaper and you can often get things that are not available here, but you also have to expect some risk and accept that it won't be overnight. Sites like dhgate are escrow sites. You buy from different suppliers, but pay dhgate. Dhgate then pays supplier if you receive the item. If item is lost they carry the can.
