How to get rid of / repel garden moles?

Try a mole windmill. Cut flabs in an empty 2L coke bottle and mount it on a stick. Everyone in Cape Town swears by this, but haven't used it myself. I assume they just don't like the movement.

An old ballie told me just pour some petrol into their holes, they will never come back. Surprisingly enough, it worked for me.
I've tried putting the following down the holes without success :(

1) Water - various variants: plain, soapy, & mildly acidic (pool acid but don't overdo it or you'll kill the grass).

2) Petrol - don't use in holes on the lawn as it's a surefire grass & weed killer.

3) Car exhaust fumes - run car for as long as you like, never worked for me.

One method I haven't tried but am told is entertaining:

Acquire some acetylene pellets of the type that were used in old bike/car lights (not sure where you'd find them).
Put some down every hole you can find together with a bucket of water and block the hole with dirt.
Wait half an hour while the tunnels fill with acetylene gas.
Open one hole, stand well back and throw a lighted match in.

... admire the explosions of dirt at the holes you treated - as I say I'm told it doesn't get rid of the moles but does give you a warm feeling :)

I've come to the conclusion that the moles only move on when their food supply (worms, grubs etc) diminishes below a certain point :sick:

My dad closed up all the holes 'cept one. Backed the car onto the lawn and stuck a flexible pipe on the car exhaust. Shoved the pipe down the open hole. Then he added drops of break fluid to the carburator (old car) and revved the engine for a while.... never had a mole in the garden after that again.

As someone said, its war ... our's turned chemical though.

The only product that has worked for me is QuickPhos tablets available from any garden centre.

Heard this old lady on the radio using Jeyes Fluid to chase baboons away. Try on moles as it may work and not kill others.

She mentioned earthworms coming out wriggling for a while but then dissappear. Could be birds :)

We used to have the same problem where we lived previously. I tried the following, and it worked, but you need patience and tenacity.:

Regular patrols of your garden. Take a watering can or hose. Watch the mole heaps. If you see slight movements of the sand, it means Mr Mole is digging below. Dig open that hole and pour water down the hole. Do this every day. They will eventually realise it is a hostile environment and move away.

Dig open the holes you can see and sprinkle some "Get Off My Garden" (sort of green jelly-like granules available ate pet section of supermarkets) granules down the holes. The sharp smell of the granules will discourage them. Do this regularly.
This constant guerilla warfare will eventually drive them away permanently.

This, just keep flooding the bastards until they up and leave. Just try not to drown the critter

So we have been targeted by a gang of mutant moles. Tried the coke bottle, tried the flooding of their holes so now it's getting serious.

Quick solution... close all the holes but one and pump LP gas.

We had a little device that ran on solar power. Used to vibrate at a certain frequency every few seconds. Chased them away after a few days... its still running now and still no moles returned. I have no idea what its called though, i know we bought it from burmeisters for around 120bucks 6 years ago.

Hello, anyone listen to me?

SOLAR MOLER

It works, trust me.

Superplants sell them for over R300 but this website is less:
http://www.sustainable.co.za/solar-moler-solar-mole-repeller-eco-home.html

Details

The solar powered mole repeller emits powerful sonic waves (intermittent combination of sound and vibration) to the keen ears of underground rodents. The unit is Weatherproof, water-resistant and UV-resistant.

NO TRAPS, NO POISONS. It is safe for children and pets.

Technical Data

* Frequency: 400 Hz -1000 Hz,*
* Effective range: 500 to 600 M² (This may vary due to different soil composition)
* Interval: 2 seconds working time, 20 to 45 seconds intermission time*
* Battery type: 1 pc 1.2v 600mAH “AA” size NI-CD rechargeable battery
* Solar Panel: Monocrystalline silicon, 4.5V, 60ma
* Material: Durable ABS plastic & corrosion-proof aluminium
* Product dimension (mm): 17.2"" H x 6.1"" D (43.8cm x 15.4cm)

Not if you've got two labradors that pull them out and chew on them, sonic vibrations don't deter them :(

Fair enough, I don't have dogs. I had moles pushing up heaps daily or multiple heaps a day. In the two months or so I've had them only one heap on the perimeter of the plot. Works very well in my case.

After about a month of fighting with mutant moles I went nuts and bought gastoxin poison. Had to sign a register and everything to buy them.

Attempted 3 times to kill them and it didn't work.

I then bought that mole repeller thing that you stick in the ground and since doing that we haven't seen a mole since.

I wish I wasn't such a douche, should have bought that gadget in the first place. Thanks for the help guys.

PS ~ they didn't have a solar powered one at builders, got one for R340 plus R90 for 4 X D batteries. Small price to pay for my sanity.

The solar one's batteries apparently only lasts a year anyway.

Yip, my moles are gone since I installed one in front and one in the back. And I had a moerse mole. The heaps were large and it was pushing up new ones daily. Sections of the paving in the back was collapsing because of it's tunnels underneath!

The one in the front I moved a few meters right next to the perimeter wall as it was still active on the sidewalk. Gone now.

I got mine from Superplants. It was in the R300's.

By the way, since searching for a pic to post here I found it even cheaper for R235 from http://www.sustainable.co.za/solar-moler-solar-mole-repeller-eco-home.html.
