How to get TELKOM to fix exchange in Panorama, Cape Town

Hey all,

We have recently moved house from Parow North (Cape Town) to Panorama (Cape Town). We have transferred our lines to the new house, but I come to discover that I will not be able to get 10MB or even 4MB ADSL here as the lines are too far from the exchange, though telkom still sells the connection speed for the area.

When I was in Parow North, connecting to the same exchange at the new house, I was synch'ing at 10Mbs and now moving an additional 2 kms I cannot get decent ADSL!

A Telkom technician that came to the house today, told me that the best and most reliable speed I will get is 384Kbs. *

According to the technician what needs to happen is for Telkom to install a min-exchange for the area to boost the line transmission and requests have been made on numerous occassions to Telkom but nothing has happened and no one knows if it will ever happen.

Does anyone know anyone at Telkom I could contact to try see how this problem can be rectified.. someone with power and some willingness to have things dones properly...

thanx
Dave

With LLU just around the corner, they would be mad to spend any more money on something they are going to be forced to just hand over.

Sigh, I also live in Panorama (021 939) and I've had Telkom techies in and out of my house so many times I've lost count.

The fastest speed that I'm able to sync at is 2048/512 and that's pushing it, with a desync randomly every few days

Line Attenuation averages at around 51db[down] 31db[up] while my SNR average at around 14db[down] 14db[up].

There is no hope for this area until Telkom decides to remove their heads from their asses and do something about the areas with high volumes of ADSL subscribers who have bad lines. The techie I spoke to told me every second house in Panorama has ADSL, assuming it's not all going to be 4mbps, but still! :/

What! I've been bugging them to move me to another DSLAM for ages, it never gets anywhere, the furthest I've gotten is a port switch on the exchange which did improve stability slightly.

I wonder if I had to phone a techie and ask for a DSLAM switch, if I'd be put on the same one as you.

heretic, what's your line syncing at now? where about in Panorama do you live? I stay just below the Pick N Pay centre, Denne Avenue :/

im at parow north, near the grounds as you ride into it.

i was not asked or notified just noticed it went off.

it was at full 4096/512 at 43db.

now its 4095/507 with 29db, telkom stealing my bandwidth lol

what weird is i always got some errors , not allot but there were showing on the router, now i don't even get 1 error, atm 10 days connected not 1 error o.0

ahhh nevermind, for some reason I thought you also lived in Panorama, okay well I guess there is nothing that can be done here unless telkom install a new DSLAM in this area, since we are far from the Parow exchange or Belville or whichever it is :)

you know, i used to think so too but i was speaking to a friend in England about how the whole un-bundling thing played out there back when. apparently Telkom are just obligated to provide access to the local loop. the existing and additional equipment still belongs to them. they must just allow the other big boys to install their own equipment and backhaul, or lease out theirs' at the same fair price for everyone. i'm still not sure if they can charge the others' for the physical space the other providers' gear would take up in their exchanges and cabinets though

Have been in the same situation, just up the road from you (Plattekloof 2). Could manage 2.5-3Mbps on the best days, even VOX put in a Fishbone with 4 lines bundle. But it never worked since the line were not reliable enough. I even propose to the Telkom supervisor to pay for the installation of a mini DSLAM on my street (cheaper then moving house) but no, they would not move. It is has now been a year that I have 2 wireless links with Amobia/Frogfoot and I must say they offer great service. I still get the odd days with issues but they react quickly and always trying to help you.

Isn't Panorama quite far from Parow? I recall Panorama being on the other side of that major road pretty far away so it might be on a different exchange but I could be wrong.

In terms of telco lines (ADSL) yes it is about, 3-5Km. You are right, there is the N1 motorway between Parow and Panorama. The issue is that most of the distribution boxes in the area have a mini DSLAM but for whatever reason some are not and are just at the limit (Was told that Telkom will not put a mini DSLAM unless you are over 5Km from the exchange.

In my case (Plattekloof - just above Panorama, on the hill) the distance was about 4.8Km. My "luck" is that it is the only distribution box in the all neighborhood without a mini DSLAM (probably the first one installed). The street next to time has no issue and they are on a mini DSLAM. The technicians are willing but can do miracle. In my case they change 3 time the all loop from the exchange in the hope of finding something with less attenuation but never succeeded.

Finally got so frustrated with them that I canceled everything including land line.

What do you mean by next to you? Maybe you can get fed from that DB?

Basically one street away about 200m is on a mini DSLAM. Have tried to ask them if we could do something by linking the DB to the other one or basically finding another root where the length would be less.... But the answer is NO.

Order a 2nd tellephone line with 384k adsl on and see if that gets linked to the newer mini dslam, maybe you luck and it does then just cancel the old line.

You could try what Tinuva said, you might have some luck with it.

I tried this awhile ago and after like 2-3 months a techy pitched up and was busy checking the lines feeding into the house.
Unfortunately for me I've only got 4(2 pairs) running into the house and a pair is the ISDN line and one for ADSL(Think the other one might be for the phone), so it seems all the lines are being used.

So the techy said they'll need to run a new line to the house and it being outsourced he couldn't give me a time frame.
I also asked him regarding the exchanges and he did state for Welgelegen you'd be put on the Bothasig exchange. :(

I did it about 4 months ago. There we were no free lines, however so the techy ran a brand new line through the whole block of houses for me that same day, took him about 3-4 hours with me watching TV. He actually had to go to every house down the block to get access to all the poles to lay the new cable.

So not only did I get linked to a newer non-congested DSLAM, I also saw my SNR increase by drop 10db and LA drop by 5db.

IMHO, best thing I ever did, it cost me R700 extra that one month, but it is something I will gladly pay to get moved from a congested DSLAM to one that is not.
