Forbes goes a “bit” overboard, by saying that “if you receive a text message on your iPhone any time after Thursday afternoon containing only a single square character, Charlie Miller would suggest you turn the device off. Quickly.”

/goes to send all his "yuppie" iPhone friends a text ""
/waits....

And the same for you running Windows ;)

Well maybe not 'deserve' for Windows, more like you 'will' ;)

From the sounds of it, the iPhone vulnerability was a little blown out of proportion (my bad too), being that no real world iPhone was even hacked.

There goes a sizeable chunk of this month's bandwidth - why couldnt they have released it yesterday :(

So what happens if they hack it? - does it turn it into a brick? - never bothered to read the articles... If it does not - then there is nothing that can't be sorted with a restore.

The Hacker said it was basically possible to take total control of the iPhone and access all it's contents. Also that he could propagate SMS's to other iPhones.

Apple says "no one has been able to take control of the iPhone to gain access to personal information using this exploit.”

In any case, apparently very few hackers would have the skill to even figure it out.

Excerpt from a journalist who volunteered his iPhone as a guinea pig:

Although an attacker could exploit the hole to make calls, steal data, send text messages, and do basically anything that I can do with my iPhone, the researchers were kind and merely rendered it temporarily inoperable.

Here's what happened: While I was talking on the phone to Charlie Miller, his partner, Collin Mulliner, sent me a text message from his phone. One minute I'm talking to Miller and the next minute my phone is dead, and this time it's not AT&T's fault. After a few seconds it came back to life, but I was not able to make or receive calls until I rebooted.
