How do you know if you're capped? Would IE give me a an unable to connect to server error? What sites would I be able to visit once I'm capped?

I've got a 384 connection with Telkom ISP.

Well, you won't be able to authenticate for one. :)

Trust me, it will be evident. When local becomes uncapped (Telkom is now in breach of regulation by not providing uncapped flatrated local!!!!!!) your International access should die when capped.

Some ISP's still allow you to authenticate (ie. Logon) but you wont be able to transfer any data, so pings wont work, websites wont load etc...

What about Telkoms ISP? Would they allow me to authenticate? Also, wasn't there a Telkom site that you can still visit even if you're capped, if they are your ISP?

Some SAIX resellers do allow you to authenticate once capped, but Telkom does not. IIRC, there's a guest Telkom account (don't know the details) that is never capped but you can only surf Telkom's site using it. If you can find the account details, see if you can connect with it. If you can't (and you're sure the details are correct) then your problem isn't with your account; phone Telkom.

The details for the guest account are:
User name: guest@telkomadsl
Password: guest

Nope. I have a few TelkomInternet accounts. Once you're capped, you can't authenticate, thus you can't do anything on the web.

Where do I check on my modem for authentication? Must I just check whether it connects or check whether it syncs?

That's weird cause the sync light on my modem was on last night. Even after rebooting it.

I'll check on the modem itself tonight.

If it does sync/authenticate then it's probably a problem on Telkom's side, right?

if your modem syncs then the line is fine

if you can't authenticate/connect then one (or more) of :

a) there's a problem with your account
b) there's a problem with the authentication server you're connecting to. You don't have a choice of authentication servers - you get what you're allocated.

In my experience, the authentication servers sometimes reject an auth attempt. Simply retrying immediately after the failure almost always succeeds.

Telscum does as they please.

Regulations or not when you're capped, you're capped, there is no way to connect never mind go to any damn page.

ICASA is just Telscum's b..................... (fill in the missing letters)

What's your usage?

3.5Gig

Yeah yeah, I know, 99.9% possibility of just being capped. But here's what doesn't make sense to me. I was happily downloading at 39.6 last night, when it just stopped, couldn't even connect to any site at all. I rebooted the modem and everthing was working fine again but after about 15 minutes it did the same, only even after rebooting I couldn't connect again.

Like I said I'll check out the modem in more detail tonight after work to see what the problem is. I'll also check out the guest account. BTW, what sites can I visit with this account?

You can only visit the telkom site with the guest account ;) The safest thing to do is get a WebAfrica 1Gb prepaid account, it's R70 and the Gigs get rolled over from month to month, so you can still browse and download the odd thing if you want. The 1Gb prepaid accounts are also SAIX ;)

www.webafrica.co.za

That's what I do.

Tried logging into my account, the guest account and even a friend of mine's extra account and nothing worked. I'm beginning to think that it's a problem on Telkoms side. Authentication?

Which of the wonderfull Telkom customer support numbers must I phone? And what do I ask/tell/demand from them?

You can start by phoning 0800 375 375

I found since the upgrade to 4mb with my line att at 6.5 it loses sync a lot then reboots itself whereafter it will not sync until i reboot it again. They have now changed my sync speed to approx 2.5 - 3mb and the att is now 13 with no more sync losses.
