Hi Everyone

Firstly, sorry for the delay in re-posting this info (that was lost with the forum restore 2 weeks ago). I have had quite a few PMs and have seen alot of posts asking for info on a couple of things : how to tell if a cell is EDGE enabled, how to tell what Coding Scheme (CS) you are using, how to tell how many time slots you are getting, and the big one, how to manually select (force) a tower.

The info below assumes that you have a series 60 phone (like the Nokia 6630), and that you are au fait with installing sis applications on to it. It also assumes that you have the relevant data connections loaded onto your SIM, that they are configured on the cell, and that you can connect and browse normally.

And here comes my disclaimer - you make all these modifications at your own peril! Please dont point fingers at me if you bugger up your phone :D

So, first off : Get yourself a copy of the netmon application and install it on your phone. Here is a URL where you can download it from :

http://www.symbian-freak.com/quides/netmon.htm

To activate the application, select the "Beetle Bug" icon that says "Test" on the main menu page.

So what does the info mean? Here are the important submenus to look at with this application :

1.9 Tells you the basic info about the cell you are connected to: If you are having a problem with speed or dropped connections, this is the info that will help your network to assist you. A note on signal strength - they are negative values, so the lower they are, the better the signal is. In other words, -69 is better than -80

1.3 More detail about the cell listed in 1.9. CH = Channel, RX = Signal Strength. It also gives you the important info about neighbour cells, i.e. the signal strength and the channel. More about how this could be useful later on... (when you want to manually select a base (transmitting) station [BTS])

6.1 Tells you all about your GPRS connection. DL = Download, TS = TimeSlots, UP = Upload, CS = Coding Scheme. Some things to note here - you only use Timeslots during active data transfer, even if your connection is active. If you get a reading of 0 for timeslots, and you are not downloading anything, that is correct. Try download something to see how many TS you are getting. CS will only give you a meaningful value if you are NOT on Edge - this app for some reason puts an "X" under this field whilst on EDGE. Possible values for Coding Schemes are 1, 2, 3, or 4.

6.12 Gives you your EGPRS (or EDGE) information. The field you need to look at here is " EGPRS Support". A "1" means you are on EDGE, a "0" means you are not.

81.1 Allows you to select whether you want to use WCDMA (3G) or GSM based protocols. This is handy for a number of reasons. First off, having both WCDMA and GSM antennaes active chows battery life. So if you are running low on battery, and you want to conserve it as much as possible, switch off the antennae you dont need. Further to this, if you are on MTN (who dont yet have 3G), its pointless having the 3G antennae going all the time. Switch it off - it will save you battery life! So to do this - press "options", select "execute", and enter a 0,1 or 2 depending on what you are tring to accomplish, and select "OK". The phone will reboot - this is normal.

So, the big question.... How do you manually select an "EDGE" tower. Its all done via menu 1.12. You need to do some homework first though. Go to menu 1.3, and write down info on your neighbour cells. you need the channel number and the signal strength. Write them down! You now need to translate the channel number into HEX for input into the app. To do this, open your calculator on windows. Click "View", "Scientific". Make sure that the "Dec" radio button is selected. Type the channel number into the calculator, then click the "Hex" Radio button. Write down the Hex values for each channel that you wish to manually connect. Example = Channel 110 has a HEX value of 6E, This is the value you are going to input for 1.12.

So, to manually select the BTS :
Select menu 1.12
Press "Options"
Select "Execute"
Under "input value", enter the HEX value of the Channel you want to manually select.
Under "BTS TEST" you should now see the manually selected channel displayed in Decimal format.
To cancel a manual selection, the input value is EE

You may want to manually select all the neighbour Channels until you find one that supports EGPRS (EDGE) detailed in 6.12!

Dont forget to cancel your manual selection when you are on the move :D

Any queries, please let me know. Dont be suprised if you see this post edited a few times to make it easier to follow :) Moderators - feel free to make
it more pretty/make it a sticky if you so wish!

LOL. Well if it goes missing tomorrow then I will know that there is definately something sinister going on :D Like a national campaign to give /me more work to do!

two things i noticed.

1. i cannot pick up the name of my tower with this app, which could make it easier when one moves from one area to a neighbouring area. this is useful when one wants to manually select EDGE in that neighbouring area.

2. the obvious thing stemming from the above statment, is to write the tower number down and manually input it in instead of remembering a name. what happens is that the same tower number is called something different (points to a different tower) when one is in that neighbouring area and trying to manually select.

eg. tower 108 in durban is an EDGE tower, what does it show on your phones, anyone? i get anything from parlock to umhlanga ridge.......however it just shows "yello broadband" most of the time so its difficult to see which one it is.

is this a common problem?

does anyone have a list of which tower number is in which area. manually trying to get it by being in the areas is time consuming. i am in durban.

p.s CAN WE FORCE 3G IN DURBAN YET AND IF SO, WHICH ARE THE TOWERS? NUMBERS ANYONE?

A note on Netmon

I have noticed with netmon on my 6630 that having netmon on the fone means the battery life goes for a ball of chalk... I rarely get 24hrs battery life. Remove the software then it goes back to the normal 5 days or so.

Unless of course I'm doing something wrong :)

I found that the 6630 crashes alot and restarts alot. similar to the 6600 that i have.
also i find that using a sony ecrisson bluetooth headset makes it crash sometimes when things are not done in the correct sequence. the battery life isnt great, a day or so, with or without netmon. try closing netmon and only activate it when u use it.

is there a software upgrade that is available. i got the phone for only 2 weeks. a bit disappointed...

Hi
My 6630 hasnt crashed on me once in the 5 months that I have had it...
To conserve battery life :
a. Switch of the UMTS antennae if u r not using it
b. Close any unnecessary application if you are not actively using it (like netmon, celltracker etc) [there are some memory managers out there that will allow far better granularity of control over the apps]

It may be a good idea to get the firmware on the phone upgraded. To check which firmware you are currently using on the phone, execute transaction *#0000# . Give the Nokia Service centre a ring and find out if they have an update available. They dont charge for the update and it normally only takes a couple of hours. Nokia can be located in Somerset Rd Greenpoint (Western Cape) and just off Sloan Str Bryanston (Gauteng).

Last thing - if you think the battery life is bad on the 6630, its going to be even worse on the 6680... They use the same processor and battery, and the change in colour depth on the display uses more processing power and more battery.
Cheers -

You cannot 'force 3G' until you are provisioned for 3G. This will be done after launch in June. I would not recommend using NETMON for 3G - rather let the network and handset select the optimal connection.

I agree. I only use netmon to specifically select UMTS or GSM, depending on what I am doing. If I have a large amount of mail waiting to go out, and EGPRS is available, I select GSM manually to stop my phone hunting onto 3G. I find that EGPRS is far superior when it comes to outgoing traffic. I always get 2 channels at 115 - 120kbps, much faster than 3G :D

wats the latest software available. i got the v2.39.15, 11.11.04, rm 1, you?

NOW we're talking.....

Thanks ScrnScrm....

Have forced my 6630 to use an EDGE enabled channel and am now getting pretty impressive results....

Over the last hour the highest download speed I have reached is 37.0 kB/sec (according to DU Meter) and averaging around 24kB/sec

Roll on 3G!!!

Hi
Do a google on "celltracker.sis" - its an app that keeps record as your roam around of the base station codes and the 900 broadcasts and the cell "English" name. Might make your life a bit easier!

Well, eh, I can show you how to do that as well :D
Not that difficult actually...

Ash. I have to say that all the 3G services are already open to customers. Voice and data have been open since May. Videocalls are open on MTN postpaid (to MTN) and are free until the end of the 25th June 2005 (this Saturday). The only thing you are lacking is a videomailbox.

From Sunday if you upgrade to a USIM the videomailbox will become available. Else if you PM me tomorrow and promise to give us your feedback directly I'll see if we can squeeze in a final batch of trial numbers for the mailbox tomorrow (can't promise).

Thanks ScrnScrm for keeping people updated with the netmon info. This should be a post on its own for easy reference.
