so, while browsing the classifieds i found the following
Console has latest media update to play DivX and AVIs and also play music from an iPod.

does a normal xbox straight out of the box have this functionality as standard?

if not how will i be able to make mine play those files. please note my xbox is not connected to the net

Yepo, you'll have to hook it up to the net and download the updates to get the codecs for playing dem videos.

I think you can put the file onto a CD and play it through the XBox and let it update.

AFAIK, just burn the update file to a normal CD and insert it into the XBox and let it run.

Actually u cant do it like this. U can use a cellphone and connect it to your'e PC,connect to the internet via 3G and enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Then connect xbox to pc via ethernet cable and insert a disc with a divx movie on it and it will prompt u that in order to play this file u need to download the media pack update. Select yes and update will automatically download u do not need an xbox live account in order to download it.

Hope this helps

To create an update disc you need the following:

* A DVD or CD burner.
* A blank, writeable DVD or CD.
* The update file from Xbox.com.

This procedure involves burning the DVD or CD by using Microsoft Windows DVD or CD burning software. If you're using third-party CD/DVD writing software, follow the instructions for creating a data disc.

The same steps apply whether burning a CD or a DVD.

To create a DVD or CD:

1. Click here to begin downloading the update folder. Save it as "$SystemUpdate_Fall08.zip" anywhere on your computer.
2. Place a blank disc in your burner.
From Windows Explorer, select Open Writable CD Folder Using Windows Explorer or open the CD drive icon.
3. Open (double click) the zipped $SystemUpdate_ Fall08.zip folder and drag the contents of the zipped folder to the root of the CD Folder. If the CD write window doesn't open by default, drag and drop the folder onto the CD/DVD RW drive.

Note
If you are using an earlier version of Windows you will need to open the file using a separate utility (for example, WinZip).
4. In the Explorer window, click Write files to CD from the CD writing tasks or right-click the CD/DVD RW drive and select Write these files to CD.

Caution
The update filename and folder structure must be intact for the update to run properly.
5. Follow the steps in the CD wizard.
When you are finished with the wizard, the CD will eject. Your CD is ready.

To update the console:

1. Place the CD in the Xbox 360 console.
2. Power cycle the Xbox 360 console.
3. The update program will start automatically. Select Yes, update now and press A.
4. Wait for the update to complete.
5. When the console reboots, you're done.

Someone who does the updates told me that I could burn it to CD and update it like that.

Codec updates can only be downloaded directlyfrom XBL only dashboard updates can be done via cd's not codec updates.

I'm the wrong guy to help out re networking setups but it will work via 3G/your phone.
Mostly i followed thru here, but vista does have some xtra steps not mentioned.
"D)ICS" here
http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007/04/ip-failed-xbox-360-live-test.html

If your on Vista its ROUGHLY
1) connect up to the net
2)control panel/network & sharing centre/click on "view status"/Properties/Sharing/check "Allow other users to connect thru this computers Internet connection".
Dissconnect from internet
Reboot PC.

DISABLE FIREWALL
Plug in xbox network cable to PC
Control panel/Network & sharing centre/
On the xbox connection "unidentified network" probably, check "PRIVATE"/next/close.
Go to xbox/System settings/Network settings/& run "Test xbox live connection.
Pray to any Gods you believe in & see what happens.

VISTA each time i connect i have to set the connection to "PRIVATE" as it will open as public and won't work.
Remember also the firewall needs to be dropped down if you have one.
I also had to manually set IP address but see how you get on.
Like i said to start with i'm not the guy to be helping re networking but see how u get on if you want to try it that way.
Good Luck

Before I had internet access, I updated my 360 with a CD and I still couldnt play Divx files on the console. Only way I could was to install Transcode 360 on my PC and stream the files via Media Center on the Xbox, worked like a charm.

Alf stop being a lemming please ! ;)

I have already mentioned before that system updates can be done via CD not CODEC UPDATES MS have to pay the Divx corporation/Faction whatever u wanna call them everytime the divx codec gets downloaded thats why it is only available to download via XBOX LIVE !

I know what I am talking about as I am the one that usually helps people when they get into problems running divx vids on their 360's http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=155551&highlight=divx+xbox
