How To Play MKV Files On XBOX 360

Hi All,

I have lots of MKV files either in 720p or 1080p HD resolution. Not too long ago I have purchased the XBOX 360 Elite. I know that as is, the XBOX 360 does not support MKV playback. But I have heard that some people are getting it to work just fine. I have tried Windows Media Centre and that has failed so I have than also tried TVersity and that works but the movie pauses every couple of seconds and tries to buffer before it plays again and pause to buffer again.

Has anyone here managed to get it working without having to convert the MKV file and ultimately loose quality of the movie?

Help will be greatly appreciated.

You just have to convert the container type to MP4

I use ps3 media server to play mkv's on my ps3. Apparently it works well with xbox360.

fuppes, with on the fly transcoding. this is near realtime once you buffer up expect a 15 second delay. free as in beer.

The problem with mkv files on an xbox is usually the sound.
It can only play movies with 2 channel audio and most mkv videos are encoded with 5.1 sound.
Try converting the audio to 2 channel, that works for me.

That is true, it may be the DTS encoding. You can retain the DTS channels but also have a 2 channel stream.
