Upgraded to a 1MBit line last week and Telkom promised to put me on 4096kbps. I am 800m from the Telkom exchange.

How comes that my line speed shows completely different values depending on who I test with. The speed doesn't feel much better than my 512kbps line before.

Speed test results
==================

Telkom ADSL Speed Test Meter 3451.8 kbps
iburst speedtest 2.18 Mbps

but then

Gamco speedtest 121.1 kbps
Sentech 1MB download test 555.05 Kbps
speedtest.net 264kbps
netaccess 112kbps

I am still with TelkomInternet as my ISP. Could that be the trap?

You aren't gonna get 4mbit speeds internationally, while you may get it when downloading something extremely popular like the latest Microsoft patch update or a popular antivirus program from download.com... you wont get it otherwize...
I have been on 4mbit since the beginning and my average speed is 50KBsec Internationally, always has been with "1mbit".
Locally however you will most likely achieve 300-400KBsec, local and international are however 2 very different things and local doesnt cost Telkom ;)

If you use a download manager such as Dap and download on more than channel, you will get the thruput as specified. Otherwise you can download eight files at the same time and thus use up your pipe. Telkom somehow or other manages to keep the normal IE or Opera transfers at a max of 50 mb/s per transfer on international links.

Yes, sorry you make a valid point ernstn.
I do often grab like 10 files at once and utilize the full 4mbit but I dont always have ten files to grab at once, nor do I have the bandwidth for it with the cap, but certainly without adownload manager the average speed is 50KBsec.

I have 384/128 kbs circuit from Cybersmart
and whn i do a test with speedtest.net i get a 312kbs download and abt 102kbs upload. This is to the Atlanta server.

What is your location and what time are u doing these tests?

Looks to me like its the ISP more than anything thats not giving your line the full potential.

I often get my full 4mbit speeds when download 1 file internationally... Streaming a single youtube video usually goes at around 340kb/s

tobeman, check what speed your router is sync'ing at, not what download speeds you're getting.

your sync speed should be 4096kbps exactly.

your router will have this info.

It's an up to 4096 - that 800 meters between you and the exchange might not necessarily run in a straight line and there's no saying how good or poor the quality of the actual line is.

What are you syncing at? Use a download manager such as reget and multi-thread whatever downloads you can - you'll get full speed more often than not. :)

PNP vs. HTTP

thanks all.

It's true: my router seems to synch at 4MBits.

I can't believe that Telkom is shaping the traffic that much!!
I mainly need it for HTTP and VOIP traffic and this really sucks.

One would imagine that you at least would get better speed than on a 512kbps line, but it remains to be in the 50-60 KBps range for me:mad:
