Thank you all for the replies. Not easy parenting a teenager on your own. His Dad passed away 2 years ago...and he would never have tried this nonsense with his Dad. He is doing very well in school...and during school term all devices go off at 9pm. Just school holidays that we sit with this problem. I feel allowing him to play until 1 in school holiday is more than enough time. And even better is if he goes to bed at a decent time

Apply the same rules during holiday time that you would during term time.

If your kid is doing ok at school, has good mannerism to others etc , just let him play, and then you get ear plugs :D

If on the other hand he was a total problem child then I would say just take the headset away then he can still play but then wont make so much noise.

Condolences, but it's no excuse. Parenting means consistency - specially at a younger age. Force tech off at a certain time, even if it's an hour or two later.

It's definitely very reasonable. People differ, it's lights out at 22h30 for my 16 ear old.

Thing is you have an opportunity here to teach him about being a decent person who who uses empathy to guide their actions.
Explain to him that it keeps you up, explain the impact this has on you.
Reassure him that you don't want to ruin his fun and ask if he work with you on a solution that has a good outcome for both of you.

It is a ZyXel
Model VMG1312-B10A

On my way to buy a plug that works on a timer. I need to block all access to the internet between 1am and 6 am.
If I only block his xbox, he will still sit and watch YouTube until the sun comes up.

You can block all traffic.

This is what I see on my Zyxel,

Even better solution, wake him up when you wake up, he'll get the message. I use to be clever like that as well, going to bed at 2 or 3 am, till my parents woke me up at 5am. Now that I'm grown up I understand what it feels like to wake up at 5 AM.
