This is why white afrikaans people should stop saying nou gaan ons braai and then proceed to drink a dozen more beers. If they started the braai the first fxcking time, the fire would have had enough time to do it's thing.

Gas braai with volcanic rock is definitely a braai. Good smoke effect from the fat that burns on the rocks. Can't tell the difference between meat cooked on my chadochef vs something on a wood braai, unless they used a particularly fragrant wood. Its also extremely easy and quick so after I got my chadochef I went from braaing twice a year to weekly.

Otherwise when lighting up a wood fire I tend to go old fashioned and just use good kindling, and build it up as I was taught in scouts. A mate of mine has a modified pipe with a hole in it that he attaches to a cadac gas bottle via a hose. Turns on gas, lights it, sticks it deep in the fire, and it would light up just about anything no matter how wet. Another mate uses those plumbers gas torches for a bit. Never needed them but those two are fast. Airflow helps but I find using cardboard or a metal tray to fan it helps plenty.

Had my first campfire two weeks ago in over a decade and was reminded why I no longer enjoy those. Sinus's are haywire after all that smoke and it makes you stink to high heaven of the smoke.

But with your way there would be less time for drinking..

Afrikaners don't do that kind of sad braais.

Think man, think before you type!

Two words that do not go together in a sentence, gas and braai..

There is no such thing as a gas braai.. using gas to cook meat is not a braai..
Having an Anglo American braai-splain this to you is going to sting a little... but a braai isn't about the fuel.

Thank you Bwana
It is about cooking a meal over a hot source outdoors and having a few drinks and a good time
Not everything has to be cremated over dead trees.
