The issue sounds like more like you need to sleep train your child. Kids should not need you to lie next to them to fall asleep. We put our kids to bed at 7 and won't hear from them again until the next morning when they wake up. Having them in that routine is wonderful as its effortless. I know people who will fight for hours to get their kids in bed and its generally because they don't have a fixed routine so every night is a negotiation and fight. Have a bed time and a routine (brush teeth, read book, etc) and stick to it and they will soon fall into it. Very young children (under 6 months) may need to be rocked to sleep but after that you can sleep train them fairly easily. Its 2-3 nights of hell and then its over and they fall asleep on their own and in their own bed.

It is amazing just how well it works.
My daughter however has the option of staying up 15 minutes past her bedtime and no story.
She is always in bed on time :)

They say you need 7 hours sleep but remember this does not include the time you wake up during the night or time to get to sleep. So in reality if you need 8 hours sleep you will need to spend 9 hours in bed. For 7 hours your going to need 8 hours in bed.

Thoughts?

I put the sleep monitor on my watch on for a couple of nights. On average i was moving for about 10 minutes each night (including toilet breaks, if any).

Normal sleep requirements vary widely. It's quite possible that you just need it. And if your lifestyle supports it, relax and enjoy.

For many years now I sleep for 4 hours 17 minutes exactly. Like clockwork.

Then there's this - Myth of the Eight Hour Sleep.

The moment I put my head on that pillow I am gone and it feels like a second then I wake up, normally. When I wake up I get out of bed and start doing stuff. I don't really think I am awake in between, unless I need to go to the bathroom.

Read a book or a magazine while you wait for your daughter to fall asleep.

@OP: Back to Basic: The healthier you get, the less sleep you need. But try to keep it between 6 - 8 hours.
Other factors, like smoking and drinking may cause you to sleep longer, because the body needs more time to heal and more time to rest.

So drop the bad habits and pick up a sport like squash or something,

I sleep 6 hours almost to the minute and wake up. No matter what time I go to bed.
It works well for me, but is painful at times. Sometimes I am tired at 23H00 but have to force myself to stay awake else I wake up at 5. Sigh.

Got this way by forcing routine and it became habit. Light regular exercise also helps to keep it at 6 hours.
