Yep, they can turn it off. If I recall correctly it will turn off 2000 km after it turned on

Maybe it's trying to tell you someting. ;)

And then people act surprised when their cars leave them stranded... :erm:

i have been telling her for months to put her front number plate on and the other day she got a R500 fine for that. tonight i will tell her to service the damn carretjie.

Ja, usually it's for telling you that the car needs a service (or the mechanic needs a raise :D)

There is a way you can do it yourself:
-Your instrument cluster should have TWO buttons....let's call them LEFT and RIGHT
-Press and hold RIGHT
-Switch ignition on while still holding in RIGHT button
-The word "SERVICE" will appear in the trip recorder display
-Release RIGHT button
-Turn LEFT button to the right to reset the display
-Switch ignition off
-Finished

serviced it myself...

OK...that's fine...I know that there were very clear instructions on page 69 of my Jetta Handbook where they told you how to switch it off if you serviced it yourself.

On the same subject it always blows me away that people will happily carry on driving with various idiot lights desperately trying to tell them that something is wrong!!

After all that is why they were called "idiot lights" in the first place!! :D

Agreed, but in my personal vernacular 'idiot lights' refer to rear fog lights when used in clear weather. That should be punishable by death!

Yes but isn't that the case with most BMW drivers...;)

I have no problem with Fog lights, i rate they help people see the lines on the roads better, so rather have them stick it on...My issues come with these new Xenons that all these cars are shipping with. When someone is driving behind me, or head-on on a dark road it becomes near impossible to see. All you see is this white light :\
