To summarise...
I tried to pay a few hundred rand for groceries at a supermarket which for now will be nameless.
It was declined.
Took it to ATM in the supermarket and R4500.00 had been withdrawn over two days at a Saswitch ATM -last weekend.
My card had not been anywhere but inside my wallet.
Reported it to ABSA, spent an hour at police station, have a case number and now have a case file at SAPS and the bank.
Now....when asked where last I had used the card it was the very same supermarket. On hearing this the lady at the bank raised her eyebrows and said ' not another one '. Apparently they have many similar cases where the last place of use was at the cashiers of this supermarket.
When I pay I hand the cashier my card, she swipes it through the machine, asks cheque or savings then turns the machine to me to put in my pin.
How is it possible to clone my card - and then use it - obviously with my pin which I always cover up on input ?
I have written to the supermarket and asked them in light of the apparent high incidence of card cloning at this outlet what they have done about it - we shall see what the response is.
So, is it possible to get the pin from a debit card by swiping it, and how did they do it without me seeing ?
