How Whitey Basson outsmarted Walmart

So he scammed Walmart??

*Claimed to have, yes.

I have a hard time believing that Wallmart were being held back back by 'Massmart being listed on the JSE'. Nothing stopped them from going all Wallmart on the market as they had a 51% stake in Massmart and wanted to buy the remaining stake at a premium.

They had the stores, the prime spaces, the warehouses and distribution network. It is simply a case of one does not simply dominate the market...

Walmart came to SA for profit, not to help the plight of consumers. Perhaps Mr. Basson was just a pawn in their attempt to get a favorable yes from the government to stifle any resistance from unions in taking over from Massmart...

They hardly ever go all Wallmart outside US but usually keep the 3rd party identity.
They had the stores, the prime spaces, the warehouses and distribution network.
They actually cried about SA retailers keeping them out of prime spots with exclusive contracts.

They did nothing to the market or prices. It is as if there never came. Africa's not for sissies.

Of which they had nothing to show for but closing stores.

If you're done making up bedtime stories, perhaps you'll realize that unions have no business nor can do anything in the selling of private companies

The deal needed government approval (via the so-called Competition Commission). Organised labour is a partner in the ruling tripartite alliance, and the Stifflers, Controllers and Limiters serving on the Commission certainly have an ear for the unions.

I don't know if this is related to your comment, but the Game Store in the CT CBD closed last year, the irony is that there was a shoprite less than 50 meters away from it

he did what every shrewd business person would do, - kill any threat to his business, before it even could get out of the gate --- very down to earth oom, very fastidious - still prefers to drive around in his cost efficient old krok

i see your whitey basson, and raise you...a blackie swart

The deal needed CC approval, as with many deals, not only here, but everywhere in democratic countries have similar bodies. The CC has a clear mandate and is limited to what its allowed to investigate under the Competition Act...and that is restrictive business and monopolies/abuse of dominance.

Business can actually sue it if it wanders outside that very limited mandate, so this union nonsense is simply making up stories.
