How your airtime and data disappears and what you can do to stop it

People on MTN PAYG are complaining of airtime being reserved for data, i.e. you have data & airtime but then you get this when you check balance: available airtime : R0.00 ; Reserved for data : R15.25 ; Data bundle : 20 MB.

Who else but MTN charges you ahead for data you haven't even used yet?

WASP stealing the money.
Happened to a friend on MTN, she "subscribed to a WASP without realising it" - was using R5 per day.
The sad thing is that's it's too much effort to recover the money.
There are no accessible statements on MTN PAYG so fighting over a few hundred rand was just too much trouble.

I was swindled by WASPS and because of a lack of assistance from Vodacom I ported away.

What about airtime that used to disappear from my dumb phone incapable of data? And no, it's wasn't a WASP. It was random amounts billed in cents at a time. Funny that this "stopped" with the advent of smartphones. I bet the only reason people don't see it any more is because they make connections so often they wouldn't notice if a few cents were disappearing every day. How else do the networks make up that commission they have to pay.

MY solution is to search for and prevent ALL auto processes, and either switch them OFF or put them on manual.

Remove ALL apps that I have no intention of using.
Check ALL apps at least once a month to make sure nothing has changed which allows background activity.
Implement whatever protection is available that came with the smart device.
THEN install you own control sw that automatically cuts you off when your package is exhausted, forcing you to reconnect if you want to continue connecting.

A pain and sometimes a nuisance but for me the hassle is a small inconvenience.

And I agree with the comments about MTN ----- there is definitely something vrot in their system somewhere.

While this is been looked at how about something been done about adult internet sites that demand your credit card info, under the pretense that they need to verify your age, and no money will be deducted from your card. And then deduct money, which you only get back after a long delay and a lot of effort. Again the banks treat the customer as guilty until they prove themselves innocent.

LOL. Just use a prepaid debit card if you have to subscribe to any of those. But seriously why?
