One of my mates laptops fan has died, when she starts the laptop it gives her a warning that her system fan is not working and then the laptop shuts down. She took the laptop back to the place where she bought it, her warranty has already expired and they are quoting her just shy of a R1000 to replace the fan.

Does anyone know of a place in the Durbanville (CPT) area, where I person can get a fan for that type of laptop, it cannot be to hard to replace it yourself. Can a person use any type of laptop fan, or does the fan have to be model specific?

I don't think you'll like my answer - perhaps someone else will have a different idea.

Seeing as though my laptop is getting old, replacing the fan is something I had already investigated :p

Buy it off eBay, and spend a few hours stripping the laptop and replacing it :) Will be the most cost effective solution IMO.

There is nothing wrong with your answer, that is what I'm considering to help her with, just get a fan and replacing it by ourselves, there is a lot of youtube vids on how to do it. The only thing, is we want a faster solution then ebay, if we could just get the fan from a shop it would be easier.

Yeah I understand - same problem I have with buying off eBay.

Perhaps contact the blokes at hpshop.co.za, or try get hold of someone at HP ZA. I've never dealt with either of them, but you might strike it lucky.

Open laptop (download service manual) and check if the fan just needs cleaning.

This.

I managed to get several years out of a Lenovo a while back when the fan stopped. Just popped it open and cleaned out the fan. Gave it a few spurts of lubrication for good measure and it was good to go. Never gave any more problems after that.
