HSDPA download speeds

I connect at 230.4 Kbps but my actual download speeds are between 90KB and 100KB per second. These are true speeds and I can download a 4MB MP3 song or file in about 45 seconds. How does this compare ? How does ADSL match to this and what does the 256/512/1024 mean from Telkom ?

The 230.4Kbs is a reporting error, so ignore it, you're connecting at 1.8Mb/s and are getting around 800Kb/s download.

Run the test at http://speed.vodacom.co.za/test/ to get your throughput at that point in time.

Is that also a reporting error? Where did the 1.8Mbps go :D ? [BTW - in the rest of the world no one has ever managed 1.8]

Yes, its like bying a car. The manufacturers say it has got a top speed of 180miles/h and no matter what you do you only get 80miles/h.

I think its false advertising.

Best I ever got was 1733Kb/s, see attached jpg. This was running the Telkom speed test. But it was obviously under perfect RF conditions.

One forumite did send me a screenshot once of getting 1.8Mb/s.

That argues the case against advertising the speed as 1.8 capable. For Vodacom to do that, they have to prove that a fair number of customers DO get that speed (and not in freak conditions). The situation is ripe for an adjudication from the ASASA.:p

Here is my new highest speed in Brackenfell.

Download Speed: 1422 kbps (177.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 162 kbps (20.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

This was only with 1bar 3G/HSDPA with a Huawei E620.

how can we get these perfect conditions? must we get a special antenna or something?

You can expect speeds between 400KB per second and 800KB per second, with peaks of 1,2MB per second when using Vodacom's national 3G HSDPA network.

Both the quality and strength of the RF signal plays a big role, so you'll get the best possible RF throughput when both these are good.

An antenna always helps but it could defeat the whole object of being mobile.

Congestion on the cell / transmission / international links all play a roll and could also affect throughput. This is relatively easy to fix, just upgrades on the links (might take time in certain cases).

RF is more difficult as there is only so much spectrum.

anything easy that i can do (remember me not a geek lol)

Lick you left index finger and hold it straight up while you type. This will help boost the signal....:p

Basically an external yagi antenna will always help but you obviously have to bolt in onto your house, so you can't really move it around. But if you have bad signal conditions they can work wonders.

Otherwise there's not much you can do, except report slow speeds so we can follow up on it.

All contracts are supplied by the Service Providers (VSP, Nashua, etc.), so I can't help you directly.

Where are you baed in Pretoria, I've had some good feedback on the Vodashop in Menlyn.

 AFAIK several forumites slated the Vodashop @ Menlyn for bad service...has that particular retail outlet seen the light & changed its ways?

Yes, I remember. After those episodes, they appointed 3G-only consultants......
