HSDPA Samsung Z563i

Used my Vodacom Pre-paid SIM

Downlink: 120 Kbpss 78 KB/s
Uplink: 32 Kbps 5 KB/s

New Germany
Durban

Wyebank Basestation

HSDPA enabled Samsung Z563i from Dubai

And by the way Vodacoms data cards pick up poor signal compared to phones and unbranded data cards.

Works full speed on MTN and Cell C's testing points:D

What should the upload speed on HSDPA be because 56Kbps doesnt sound right.

AFAIK network limited [shaped?] to 128kbits/s, with the hardware potential to do 384kbits/s later on...

Have a look at some of the upload speeds tested lately;

You'll see that we've upped the upload limit to 384Kb/s.

All sims are being provisioned for 384Kb/s in the uplink and should be completed soon.

This is a dof statement.

What is an 'unbranded' data card? Something that got knocked up in someones garage?

There are very few manufacturers of data cards and all providers use them around the world.

Option, Novatel, Huawei, Sierra Wireless, etc.

V3G

Did (tried to) do a test from home last night, but once again got 619 errors and had to do the remove re-insert routine.

I'm still using the 3G card, and had to revert to GPRS for a connection that was stable enough to run the speed test. But this also took 2 attempts and after that I could not keep GPRS on long enough to post, so here it is today.

Centurion, close to Centurion CBD. Cellphone shown Lenchen South-3

Download speed 88kbps
Upload speed 48kbps

In JHB, I have a 3G stable connection, speeds tested this morning:
Download 326kbps
Upload 57kbps

Well trying again here in the Cape (Milnerton) this morning, the throughput issue seems to have been sorted:

Vodacom Tests
Last Result:
Download Speed: 624 kbps (78 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 328 kbps (41 KB/sec transfer rate)

Last Result:
Download Speed: 734 kbps (91.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 267 kbps (33.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Telkom Test
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 6.891 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 592.1 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 72.6 (kiloBytes/second)

And the error 619 on 3G seems to have been sorted too... Let's hope it stays sorted now;)

Is something up today?
Been having a problem for the last hour. the data card jumps from/to HSDPA,3G, Egde, and GPRS. It has also died about 5 times. (now on ISDN dialup)

Randpark Ridge
Tower at Panarama sports club (ruimsig-2)

I had the same problem this morning in PE. My datacard kept jumping to GPRS (and would then die) - to fix
it I had to set it to "3G Only".

now back to original topic i just got

(Vodacom Test)
Download time: 5.188 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 786.4 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 96.4 (kiloBytes/second)

although I did get speeds over 930 kilobits /second yesterday afternoon.

(Charlo Tower - PE)

Are you guys saying you're seeing 3G/GPRS selection issues?

I've also had reports of an increase in disconnects.

How about '619' occurrences?

Your feedback?

There has been an increase in disconnects (I have set my connection to auto redial)

I have not had a problem with staying on HSDPA when set to 3G preferred, only had the problem for a hour earlier (my cell phone showed full signal, and the dash 3 bars when it happened)

My speeds have come down again, I got a call from the Rustenburg techie yesterday telling me that the towers got the patch, but on wednesday I got quite good speeds in the morning, now I got this speed right now, I am using the 3G only profile option, but my connection is very erratic, the downlink disappears a lot during the day but by sending multiple page requests it usually gets established again. So you guys got something right, but now it is messed again :p

Vodacom
Download Speed: 135 kbps (16.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 98 kbps (12.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Telkom:
Download time: 128.906 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 31.7 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 3.9 (kiloBytes/second)

Disconnects

Had some yesterday evening, none so far today (3 hours connected):)

Latest speeds for Waterkloof Ridge, Pretoria:
Download Speed: 747 kbps (93.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 342 kbps (42.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Just keep in mind that the network is still having "teething problems", please give the poor techs a break, report your problem (with details) and they are sure to try and fix it asap.;)

Well i am mainly talking about the Option cards, If i use and option card only get 3 bars. A phone full and Huawei card full signal. Maybe that is half of Vodacoms problems is the option cards. They also crash the dash more then a phone or the Huawei card. I tested all of them. But by far the Novatel cards are the best!

Anys HSDPA is still slow as hell, and whats about the uplink being rasied

Dunno where you've been living dude, but maybe when Cellc finally launch HSDPA (that is after they've built a decent voice network) you may be able to actually quote facts around here.

Firstly, the option card is well known to have a MUCH better signal strength than any other card. Do you even know that different firmware versions and software versions are available for the different cards? Do you know that if you insert a different make card you must re-create a profile???

Secondly, the novatel is fraught with problems, from signal strenth, to compatibility issues, to incorrect PID modem settings being supplied to SA. This is spoken about alot in this forum, and as a retailer of all 3, I can tell you in no uncertain terms, the novatel is an absolute nightmare, and VERY weak in the signal strength department.

From someone who doesn't even know whether motorola or alcatel builds their towers, I would stick to the Cellc threads if I were you!!!!:) :) :) At least until your network start specialising in the HSDPA product offering. Until then, you are equal only to a member of the peanut gallery owned by the competition!:)
