HSDPA Speeds and MTN

In the article HSDPA networks show rapid growth: survey, there are some talk about the speeds of HSDPA and what to what speeds some networks are capable of.

My big question is to what speeds are the MTN network capable of and what are they planning for the near future?

The e220 is 3.6Mbps capable but, is the network capable of delivering those speeds? And if the network is, when can we expect to see new devices on the market that can make use of the higher speeds that can be delivered by the networks?

I can't really answer your questions all as for the current network

If the Switch is running 1 E1 then the peak for the switch is around 1.4 you'll get between 500 and 700kbs typically if we had 2 E1 links then we could provide up to 1.8 but due to 7 month backlogs on E1's we can't provide up to 1.8 on all our base stations

As for what were planning I can't say much as I'll be giving away our strategy but what I can tell you is this.

We're should have 3.6 available this year you should also see a up to 1.8 upload speed this year 2007 you should see up to 7.2 download speed and up to 5.8 on the Upload then by 2009 you should see up to 100mb download and a 50mb upload

Hope this explains things?

If the speeds are well below those advertised, then we are going to have issues. We don't want to upgrade to 3.6, only to get the fabled 1.8 as has been discredited on your rivals side.

Well if you look at MTN and VC we say up to 1.8

As I said I can't say to much otherwise everyone will know our plans in terms of the 3.6 - All I can say is watch this space in terms of the 3.6 thing

OK, but remember that as far as ads are concerened, there are guidelines for saying "Up to ...". For example, if speeds are around 400kbps most of the time, but an engineer once achieved 1.8Mbps on a sunny day whilst using a Yagi antenna sitting in his car next to the base station which nobody else was using :D - then someone will get the ads changed to a more representative claim.

Cool thanks! That is some serious speeds your speaking of there!!! I definately think Telkom would be left behind with plans like that - but who cares about Telkom anyway...

I will be glad to get 200kb/s one day with my YAGI and being less than 1km from a 3G enabled mast.

I was just downloading a 2.3kb zip file via ftp from my server... it took 10 minutes even though I was connected to HSDPA with 5 bars signal on the fastlink panel...

On the subject of speed - I've noticed that when one network is running slow, some of the others are affected too.

Are they all connected to the same 'backbone'. What I'm trying to say is are there are forces that they have no control over?

Told you to PM me your details and I'll arrange for someone from Coverage to come out to you with another YAGI and cables and also get Saleem to come see you again to try sort you out

Didn't get a reply

*LOL I must rather not give my opinion... ;-) *

In a few sentences: I struggled with Vodacom (eventually got the contract terminated after their techies confirmed no 3G reception at my house).
Now I am struggeling with MTN (who did confirm reception at my house)... But a very weak signal... I have NEVER in South Africa downloaded near the speeds mentioned by you guys here ;-) And yes your next Q is: where am I based... I am in CENTURION CBD (1km from the mall)...

OK this morning I kept an close eye on my cellphone which displays the network (ie GPRS or 3G) and the signal strength... When I drove through Olievenhoutbosch ("informal settlement" on outskirts of Centurion) - I got FULL 3G Signal... FULL!

Think I need to "un-cancel" my cancelled ADSL from Telkom... I get the feeling the cellphone / 3G / HSDPA networks in SA is still much to volatile (especially in the busy areas like Centurion CBD)...

Is there any chance of the 3G speeds being improved seeing that 3G has the capabilities of downloading at 384kbps?(The highest download speed i've ever used was about 45Kbps with full reception)

It helps being an Insider! :)

I popped in a Vodacom SIMcard in my E620 (NOT E220), and at www.gam.co.za got 2.76MBps! How is that possible? I think their speed test is a bit suspect.

Just for the record, my MTN card shows about 450kbps.

Regards,

JJF.
