I know this my sound a bit strange But i have the novetal merlin HSDPA card since friday. When it is connected and has no activity for a long time and then i use it again the speeds are shockingly slow. eg it takes forever to load my google homepage. Then after a few minuts the connection seems to come to life and it runs much faster. i can see it on my ping rates to the server www.space.com when it is "waking up" i get pings between 1000-1500ms then after it gets going i get rates of about 575ms and less. Is this a firmware problem, it is connected to a desktop through vodacom's PCI adapter.

gboy,

The HSDPA connection does 'idle' in 3G-mode but should switch within a second to HSDPA as soon as traffic flows.

I'll PM you an e-mail, if you could mail me some of your test results, we can look into it.

Tx!

will do.

I will record some ping times And telkom speed test during the day tomorrow when it happens.

For instance after my hassel with a error 962 port error. The internet was so slow I recived time out on my test pings. after disconnecting and reconnectiong it seemed a bit better. This is strange as now i have super high speed again.
but i will get back to you with some proper test results.

thanks.

Have also had this from time to time (serious lag about 30 minutes ago). But generally things are pretty stable and constant. Could this be a Telkom / SAIX issue perhaps?

I am in Scottsville Pietermaritzburg, 2 bars signal @ the moment. Best rate ever: 1.77 Mbs (Gamco test). Average: 600 Kbs. Worst: 120 Kbs (These from Gamco as well).

And the the Vodacom speed test is not always "reliable" http://speed.vodacom.co.za/test/, is it still a "Beta"facility?

Could be, but somehow doubt it.

1.77Mb? Probably a record! Anyone bettered that?

Yes, need to buy the testing software, but you know how fast procurement cycles can be......

I have a JPEG as proof :D how can I attach it?

The Vodacom Speed Meter will no doubt become the "Standard" once you have the Software in place.
