HTC P3600 which is the younger brother of the HTC TyTN are hiding a built-in GPS receiver ...
this has been a rumor floating around ... it has been confirmed on the P3600 .. i am looking into confirming it on the HTC TyTN ...

the hardware needs to be activated with software ... so it looks like these buggers are going to release a ROM and after the update .. surprise you got a GPS enabled PDA phone

So you recon the hardware is allready embedded in the device, but that they would have to release a new ROM.

Would they not save a significant upgrade like this for a completely new phone ?

You can always take yours apart and have a "look-see" ;-)

Just found this on XDA:
Dopod ROM with GPS enabled from Trinity won't boot on Hermes. The GPS is enabled by the RADIO (see trinity radio rom versions end in .11). Both devices have similar radio, but AFAIK no one tried to flash a trinity radio on hermes.

See this thread for more information on the GPS in hermes devices:

Just found this on XDA:

you wrong, someone in TAIWAN has already flash trinity rom to P3600(CHT9100) and enabled GPS. If you can read chinese, here's the link http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=224&t=267471&p=1 :D
Just be patient........author of that post said there is rumour that sometime in FEB HTC will release proper GPS ROM........Oh yes, one of my friend claims the GPS chip is worse than P3300(P800), he stood outdoor for 10 minutes and no positioning is taking place.........

I just don't like PPC with build in GPS, battery won't last long, I will rather get a PPC+BT GPS receiver.....

the GPS receiver is not the same as the the P 3300 .. The HSDPA nails the battery .. i get 7 hours talk time on my Eten X500 which has a built-in GPS receiver

Any luck yet?

None yet .. i am trying to fight off the work virus at the moment ... The Dopod ROM has the software but the Damn P 3600 has been locked down with a CID .. which can be removed from all the previous HTC devices except this one ..
there is a utility but the boys want some cash for it ... a bit more time to confirm the GPS capabilities ...:(

RE: TyTn GPS

Do you think think the GPS feature will become available ?

a) The propellers heads at XDA forums will figure it out.
b) HTC will release a new ROM with GPS enabled.
c) Stop moaning and go buy a Bluetooth enabled GPS.

I'd say give the propellerheads another week or two. I don't think HTC will be releasing a GPS enabled ROM anytime soon.

Sounds like a separate GPS unit might not be such a bad thing either. How much space did you need for the mapping software ?
