HTC Phones - From Biggest Smartphone Maker to Nothing

//Turns around to dig in the cupboard...

Yep. It's still here.

Fantastic phone and was my first Android. Definitely the best phone I've ever had.

I miss getting the "You have an HTC phone??" reaction. People that didn't have one don't really understand the level of quality that these phones were.

The battery is probably shot, but let's see if it will turn on...

Had the S710 and then the One X

Good times. Move over to Samsung Note 3 from there.

Had the HTC HD2. That was a beast of a phone. Had triple boot on it. Android, Windows, and Linux. After it was stolen, I had a HTC One M7 (still have it, but the battery is shot) and then I had the One M9 (my mom is using it now). Currently have a Mate 20 Pro.

It was just due to Stephen Elop. He worked at MS before becoming the CEO of Nokia. His first mistake was killing off Symbian/MeeGo and then his second mistake was he went with Windows Phone instead of just going with Android. Google would've given them special access as well IIRC.
Nokia was on the ropes before Elop was hired by the Nokia board.

The board had already privately rejected going Android before Elop got there because doing so would mean no differentiation from the Far Eastern volume makers like Samsung with whom Nokia couldn't compete on price.

Nokia effectively lost the plot two years before. Symbian was dead and the two internal replacement projects had stalled and ballooned in cost, all while handset sales were hemorrhaging.

Sad. Loved my Nokias.

The modern Nokias are just a brand name label.

Sure but Google would've given them more access to the Android development and thus giving them the edge.

Google offered Nokia, among other things, plenty of say in choosing the direction of Android development. By directing Android development to align with its own competitive goals, Nokia would gain some advantage, even if the changes would be available for everyone at the same time.

Not the biggest smartphone maker.

Nokia were the biggest smartphone maker at some point, peaking at just over 50% global market share, while HTC were the biggest in North America for a little while. HTC were big before they became an actual brand of their own, they made a lot of Windows Mobile devices for other manufacturers, I believe iMate and O2 (with the XDA pocket PCs) were their clients, they ran as Qtek back then.

Anyway here is Nokia’s smartphone market share numbers from 2007 to 2013.

I don't know anybody who actually got a HTC phone, it was always on people's top 2 or 3 phones to get but none of them actually ended purchasing a HTC device

I remember both my parents when I was in high school had HTCs, my Dad had a TyTN and my mother the S710, they were awesome things.

I finally wanted an HTC when I saw the Sensation XE with Beats branding (pictured below) while in University, this was going to be my first HTC, but Leaf (HTCs local distributor) had gone quiet on our market at the time, nobody could tell me if they were coming or going, I Tweeted them and spoke to them on Facebook, with no proper answers being given and so I gave up and got a Samsung Galaxy S2 instead.

I was really hoping to get this though, loved how it looked with Beats Branding and it had a larger battery than the standard Sensation.

Still have my HTC One (M8) - I don't use it any more, and haven't for a few years (went with a Wiley fox swift), but recently my son's iphone went down in flames right before lockdown. He was desperate so I said he could try the htc and see if the battery still fires up... that was 8 weeks ago and it's going strong. Battery lasts less than a day, and the camera has that horrible purple-ish tint in low light bug, but otherwise it's still alive..!

can't remember how many of them i had (the nexus one is included in that number). each of them a pleasure

If someone ever asked me what Phone brands I've owned that I will never forget it would be the HTC Desire and the Sony Ericsson P80.

Had the One X screen was huge at the time
Also had (still have it) the M8, build quality was amazing.

Pity, they made really good phones and played a significant role in Android advancement.
You could not touch Sense.
