morning all.

I had a search through previous posts, but cant find something similar so...here goes

My E220 suddenly started malfunctioning.

I plug it in...its starts up, brings the window up...then before i can connect it closes and retarts. This happens repeatedly and if i leave it overnight (for eg) i wake up to find like 30 icons open in the taskbar on bottom RHS. And in task manager/ processes there will be the same amount of VMC slots

I have updated the modem yesterday to latest software at a vodacom shop and it still does the same thing.

Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with PC restarts...no dice

I am on XP SP3.

Once modem is inserted the device manager picks the modem up and says all is fine...which clearly it not. Device manager then keeps adding and taking off the device as it starts, shuts down and retarts. (both under Modems and USB)

Whats odd is it was working fine, but then went haywire.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? and if so any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply.

Nope...same thing happens. It starts and gets to the screen where it searches for network, locks on 3G but then before i can even click connect it shuts down and restarts...in an endless loop. So wierd.

Think I am going to have to go into Vodacom yet again

yea that may be an answer. Altho Vodacom reckon it should still be fine and also am on 3yr contract which ends in start of march so can change it then. It just seems to be a software vs/and/or OS issue rather than modem not working.

Have you tried the firmware update for the E220, also id recommed installing the full VMC/VMB client 10.1 ? maybe also try a diff usb cable

"I have updated the modem yesterday to latest software at a vodacom shop and it still does the same thing." Ummm just because a Vodashop says its the "latest" doesnt mean it is, personally i don't trust the call centre or vodashops :p

On a serious note: I too suspect that the modem is not getting enough power. Are you using a USB extension cable?

If it turns out that the modem is broken, it might be a good time to go with CellC!

Hey Viva...going to try another cable and will reply back.
agree with switching. Been getting fleeced by vodacom for too long now. Contract rates are draconian at best. Prob is Cell C coverage. I go to some pretty wierd far out places and Vodacom 2G is better than no Cell C at all. At any rate i wont be contracting in a hurry once vodacom is done in a few days

I have been having major disconnection problems with my E220 since updating the firmware and software.
I never thought of a power issue. So I got out my old Novatel cable and hey presto. A completely stable connection.
Thanks
I use this modem on a iMac i5 2.8. Maybe it is also a low power issue on the USB ports.
Although a Hauwei K3715 works just fine on this computer. So maybe the E220 is just power hungry.

I'm glad you sorted the problem. After getting myself a 5m active USB extension cable, my connection is more stable too.
