Hi peoples :)

Okey today I handed in my application form for my Telkom line to be activated.
As soon as I get confirmation I will send in the forms for a 4/10mb uncapped line to Vox.

So my next job is to find a router. At the Telkom shop they offered me this one.

http://www.telkom.co.za/sites/athom...modems/&productname=Huawei HG532f ADSL Router

I've had only good experiences so far with Huawei products.

So basically yay or nay on this router? Or should I look to Netgear, or D-Link etc

PS I will be the only user on this line and its an apartment so wifi will not need to have a big range.

Thanks

It depends...

The router's OK, but you just won't be able to upgrade the firmware to any third party like DD-WRT or Tomato Shibby. I'm currently using this router after the upgrade from 4Mbps to 10Mbps Telkom line speed and this router has been a stellar performer! I am currently running it behind a ASUS RT-N66U router, since it doesn't offer any upgrade of HUAWEI firmware or is compatible with any third party firmware (DD-WRT or Tomato Shibby). Suggest to run it behind another WIFI router that's compatible with third party firmware, if you're into customizing settings for your users. :erm:

Otherwise, it's a great piece of hardware! :D

Thanks for the help and advice. Is the main reason for you suggesting I run the router behind another wifi router with 3rd party firmware to help with customizing settings for different users? Because I will be the only one on this line :D

Or is there any other reason?

Different router specification/ model?

Yes, that is the only reason. If you don't have any of that hassles, then please fully indulge in this router! :D (Edit: You specified the HG 532F specification and the other link points to the 532S specification.

Thanks Shellby1, will definitely be looking into that one.

Hmm well I did not post the post with the HGS532s. That was as stated above done by Mr Shellby1.
Or maybe I'm missing something:erm:
Not to worry the long weekend is upon us:p

No problem. In all honesty though, the TP-Link routers are also fantastic and not badly priced.

But if you want something for your apartment, the 532s will be more than capable.

Good day. I don't where else to ask - so if I am asking in the wrong place, I apologise.
I just bought the Huawei HG532F - it works well.
I have noticed though - even though nothing is connected to the router, the internet led is constantly blinking.
According to the manual this indicates data transmission.
Is this normal even though nothing is connected to the router at all?
By nothing I mean no computer or smartphone is connected to the router using the internet.
Thanks in advance.

I got it a few weeks ago and have been struggling with strange wifi issues.

The WiFi connection will occasionally just start being extremely slow, even just to log in to the router itself. Problem is fixed by either jiggling the antennae or plugging in a lan cable and using that for a few seconds. Very annoying.

Hi ljreid,

Im having a similar problem with my HG532F. It seems to work fine for 2 or 3 days and then suddenly gets slow, Im only using Wifi havent tried accessing it over the LAN to see if that fixes the problem when its slow. I have resorted to just rebooting it whenever it gets slow. Please let me know if you make any progress on this.
Thanks

I purchased this model a couple of days ago, and haven't had any luck finding the latest firmware (assuming there have been firmware updates for this model?). In fact, I haven't even been able to find any mention of manuals/downloads/specs on the Huawei site for this specific model. Very strange.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Guys I have Telkom fibre now for four months with lots of frustration and after reading your posts. Exactly the issues I experienced of slow Internet and ok after rebooting the router. Can anybody confirm if the firmware posted in this site has solved the issue?

Mine was performing admirably for a while (after upgrading the firmware), but the same issue re-emerged again. Most of the time it only happens when wifi is enabled, but there have been a few times when the router would slow to a crawl even with wifi disabled. Like many of you have mentioned, a restart normally solves it.

It's a shame, because the router works really well (especially the speed of the dsl/3gb switch-over). I'm in the process of looking for a replacement now (other model/brand).

Received this Huawei HG532f from Telkom as part of my FTTH installation and I must say it is a piece of junk. After just 2 weeks I have had to reboot it 3 times. You notice it when the internet performance starts to get sporadic. Ping times to the Huawei router starts to jump all over the place and trying to access the web based interface on the router is almost impossible.

I do not know if Telkom will replace this with anything better. Might just have to buy a Mikrotik router as I am not able to hard reboot this garbage every 3 days.
