"I love it when a plan comes together." That catch phrase was a favourite of Hannibal Smith from the A-Team, usually said while he had a big fat cigar in this mouth; and as fitting as it was for the A-Team's antics the phrase is equally as fitting for Huawei's 1+8+N strategy which was announced back in 2019.

If you have never heard of Huawei's "1+8+N" strategy then afford me this moment to educate you. The strategy is simple; build the entire digital ecosystem around a person's smartphone and the 8 devices they are most likely going to interact with on a daily basis. The eight devices that Huawei believes you are commonly using are; AR/VR glasses, tablet, PC, HD TV, smart watch, speakers, a vehicle and earphones/earbuds.

The strategy is actually far more brilliant than what it appears on the surface. Your smartphone is the "1", the first "+" is Huawei Share (which Huawei views as your means of interacting with the 8 common devices), the "8" are the above mentioned devices, and the second "+" if for the 4G/5G HiLink enabled devices such as your router.

The "N" is where the magic happens and it's no coincidence that Huawei chose the letter N since in mathematics 'n' stands for any number (think "nth degree"). "N" represents all the IoT devices you either have or will have in your life. From printers and projectors, to game consoles, cameras, robotic vacuum cleaners and health monitors (heart rate, blood pressure, etc). The IoT space is exploding and even Huawei knows there is no limit to what it can become.

Huawei's "1+8+N" strategy is not just about the hardware. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group called it a "standard for user privacy and security" as well as means to "deliver a high-quality experience to consumers." The strategy appears to be solid; there is no doubt that IoT as well as those 8 common devices are likely to be in our lives for the foreseeable future; and getting them to work together to improve our lives will be the key to a connected future.
