Human rights commission slams refugees' attack on faith leaders
The South African Human Rights Commission has slammed the “violent” attack on religious leaders at the Central Methodist Church in Cape Town.

SAHRC commissioner Chris Nissen, Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba and other religious leaders were among those attacked on Friday morning.

The leaders were trying to negotiate a resolution to conflicts between refugees who had taken shelter at the church.

Chaos erupted while faith leaders were announcing plans for the relocation, repatriation and reintegration of the foreigners.

More than 200 refugees have been living in the church for weeks after police removed them from a makeshift camp outside the premises of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) in the CBD.

So it seems refugees who were evicted from the inner city mall in CT last week were harboured in the Agnglican Cathedral as a Sanctuary down the street by the compassionate church leadership, only to now refuse to leave the building now they have outstayed their welcome. Not only are they refusing to budge, they are now threatening and intimidating the church's leadership, the head of the UNHRC and other religious leaders.

I sincerely hope Pretoria churches are taking note of this, with the removal of the illegal sit-in at the Pretoria UNHRC HQ where the same nonsense is playing out today.

Pull up the drawbridge and drop the portcullis vicor!

24 officers injured during clash with refugees in Pretoria

Over 20 police officers have been injured during an operation to remove refugees from the premises of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) offices in Pretoria.

The police were met with violent resistance on Friday morning as they removed hundreds of refugees from the UNHCR offices. Many refugees resisted arrest and fought back, bashing against the police shields and throwing rocks, cans of food, water buckets and other items at the officers. Others sat in a group and refused to move or be removed.

As a result, 24 police officers were injured – six of which were hospitalised with serious injures – following attacks with “buckets, and other objects, including dangerous weapons that police confiscated”, says provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.

...

“As soon as police gained access to the property, the group started attacking the members while the women in the group were carrying babies on their backs and sides, making it difficult for police to react,” explains Peters.

Namibia, here we come!

Foreign nationals preparing to leave Methodist Church refuge in Cape Town

The large group of foreign nationals seeking refuge in Cape Town's Central Methodist Church are preparing to leave by foot for another country after their hospitality there draws to a close, one of the leaders told News24 on Friday.

"The pastor [Reverend Alan Storey] said we have to vacate the church," said Jean-Pierre Bassou.

He was speaking to News24 after interfaith leaders were injured when they were charged by some of the foreign nationals who have lived in the church since October 30.

That was the day they were evicted by the police after a sit-in at the Waldorf Arcade near the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' (UNHCR) office in the CBD.

"He gave us two weeks and he said he can no longer keep us here. We thank him for welcoming people during the time we were running," said Bassou.

"So, we are preparing ourselves to leave with our feet to the nearest country where we will feel safe."

Namibia is one of the countries mentioned as a possible destination by the leaders.

I really hope they greet the Namibian border guards as they did those in South Africa. Attacks, stones and baby shields. Should be fun to see somebody else made off to be the bad ones for a change. @Mortymoose ;)

good on the authority for trying, its a damn shame they do not seem properly prepared or trained for these situations.

i hope those that assaulted them were arrested, child or not. they can stay in prison a bit before being deported.

So the "refugees" feel that their human rights are being violated, but they have no problem whatsoever violating the human rights of others?

Drop them off at the Namib border and hand them a free bag of salt.

Nah... there are plenty of open border peeps here that are very vocal about other countries policies and leaders on illegals and refugees... I have no doubt they have been out in their numbers this weekend collecting them and putting them up in their homes, and are now cooking them sunday morning breakfast as I type this :giggle:
