SOUTH African Post Office (Sapo) spokesperson Johan Kruger has confirmed that Hyper By The Sea post office will close its doors permanently on July 25.

The post office has been based at the Pick ‘n Pay Hyper in Durban North for more than 10 years and will now merge with the Durban North post office.

“I can confirm the post office will be closing on Monday, July 25. The rental contract has come to an end. We would have liked to have kept the branch open due to its popularity. We received many compliments for our customer service at the Hyper by the Sea branch, and I’m confident we will offer the same kind of service at the Durban North branch,” he said.

While SAPO is a poorly managed mess it's also got to deal with a modern world that just doesn't need it any longer.

I can't remember the last time I walked into a post office for anything other than a fishing license.
Users have lost trust in the competency of PO which has accelerated the decline. PO"s around the world have scaled down somewhat but still extremely functional.

It's not that. I just genuinely have no need for a post office. I don't send letters because I'm not 98 and couriers, with their sleeker operations requiring fewer branches and employees, beat post offices when it comes to delivering packages pretty much globally.

In the US their postal service is drowning in debt and that thing is "functional". Post offices around the world are feeling it big time. The problems experienced by SAPO are heightened by them being generally garbage at running the whole thing, but even if they were super efficient they'd still be struggling.

Trying to save a post office at this point, given the way the world is heading with regards to digitisation, seems like money poorly spent. If it's grants they're worried about just get a private courier service to do it for half the cost. They'd probably go straight to Gogo's door as well.

Parkview by the Pretoria's post office closed permanently a few years ago.. To find one that is open is a tricky business. Trying to get one that has license papers are even more rare..

Hyper By The Sea is a cool name for a PnP Hyper. I member thinking this was a pretty good Hyper the last time I checked it out when I was in Debben.

The only advantage of this PO was that it was open on Sunday’s for car licence renewals

Used this small post office a few times a couple years back. Especially with vehicle license renewal. Was very effective, but staff, as with all government staff, not very friendly, clever or witty, but at least they could punch a keyboard and get the paper printed at least.
