Thx

Talk has it that they are working on the drivers....

Oh, also use a router / gateway, solves the problem :)

Ok, so what's the news on this? Is HT supported yet? I have tried email Sentech support, who replied that they had no clue (no surprises there) and then I tried contacting IPWireless directly - No reply. I hate the idea that I have to keep HT disabled so that I can use my Internet connection (which is always on).

As was said once before, this is a motherboard related problem and not a IPWireless problem.
This problem so far is only on Gigabyte motherboards, where Asus, Intel, DFI and most other mobos dont have this problem.
I personally use Intel and Asus mobo's and have never had a Hyperthreading problem.

Thanks for the reply ProAsm. I did search the forum for HT related stuff, but didn't find anything.

Anyway I have an ECS 661FX-M mobo (with a SIS 661 chipset). I'm going to try to update the BIOS and see what happens.

Yeah there was a lot of work put into this at the time and I think it was TheRoDent who suggested the chipset may also be playing a large roll.
Let us know how the BIOS re-flash goes [:)]

*** Edit - A matter of Interest ***

Taken from the Intel Website:

Support systems for Hyperthreading:

Chipsets: 845, 848, 850, 852, 865, 875, 915, 925, 7320, 7520.

Operating System Support
Microsoft* Windows* Operating System Based PCs

The following desktop operating systems include optimizations for HT Technology and are currently eligible to carry the new Intelr Pentiumr 4 Processor with HT Technology logo:

Microsoft* Windows* XP Professional Edition
Microsoft* Windows* XP Home Edition

The following operating systems are not recommended for use with Hyper-Threading Technology. If you are using one of the following operating systems, it is advised that you should disable Hyper-Threading Technology in the system BIOS Setup program:

Microsoft Windows 2000 (all versions)
Microsoft Windows NT* 4.0
Microsoft Windows Me
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98 SE

Linux* Operating System Desktop Based PCs
The following Linux operating systems include optimizations for HT Technology and are currently eligible to carry the Intelr Pentiumr 4 Processor with HT Technology logo:
Red Hat Linux* 9 (Professional and Personal versions)
SuSE Linux* 8.2 (Professional and Personal versions)
Red Flag Linux* Desktop 4.0
COSIX* Linux* 4.0

Note that while other Linux operating systems may have HT Technology enabled, only the distributions above are currently eligible to carry the Intel Pentium 4 Processor with HT Technology logo. If purchasing a PC based on a different Linux operating system, check with your PC vendor to determine if the PC includes the necessary system ingredients for HT Technology and has HT Technology enabled.

ProAsm, I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 with a P4 and Hyperthreading. Stalls like a mother**************, so I disabled HT and it did the trick. I seriously doubt it's the motherboard or type of chipset.

Btw, this laptop was my first Intel since 1999 since I am a strong AMD supporter, but whatever hey... Sentech has shown me how wrong everyone's opinion on everything could be... now I only care about beer...

I flashed the BIOS with the latest version, and it ran fine for a while (read as 24 hours or so) and then started locking up regularly again. It's not HT in general that's locking up the machine, just HT in conjunction with the IPWirelesss modem connected (I know this cause I spent two weeks away without the modem, and my PC didn't lock up once with HT enabled).

Now, if everything else can run fine with HT enabled, and the modem drivers lock the machine up, then I suspect it is something to do with the drivers, not the mobo.

Interesting what you say Dr Moo, I have one PC at work, a Celeron 2 gig using an ASUS mobo.
Now this thing dont have HT but it locks up when using MyWi at least 3 times a day.
I disconnect the modem - no lockup.
It used to run Win98 and recently upgraded to WinXp Pro and although better it still locks up on occasions.

Pro, on an Intel S875WP1-E mobo it locks as well, that is a Intel *Server* Mobo with the 875 chipset. Tried 3 different bios' and still no go.

Now, I don't have much experience (read as none) building drivers for Windows, but I know that there is a Linux driver available (built by TheRoDent, I think). What are the chances of building a Windows driver? I'd be happy to help (I'm a developer with some C/C++ experience).

Also, does anyone get lockups on non-Intel machines?

the drivers are crap... What else do you run on your USB ports? I have an AMD with an AMD chipset on a Gigabyte board. And atleast twice a day it would lock up. I did some reseach and found it to be a windows XP problem and USB... A friend suggest I uninstall all my USB devices. (printer, scanner and IPW modem) Then install in the order that you use frequently. So in my case (IPW modem, printer and scanner). After doing that I never had a problem. But then I dont use Intel crap either.

myWireless 128, 64, 48, 16 - depends on its mood.

Interesting. So AMD users also have lock-ups.

I also run a scanner, and, when I get around to connecting an arial again, a USB remote sensor for my TV card. I'll try the install in order of usage thing, and see if that helps. I'll also see if I can't find some updated USB drivers.

AFAIK XP, 2k Server (not pro) and 2k3 are the only versions that support HT. So I don't think the other ones would have it.
Incently when I had lockups it was on WinXP
Maybe this is related and maybe it is not (might just be the device is buggy) but I have an network router device for IBurst, from NoWire and that also locks up once a week or so.
From what I have seen it is basically just a small computer running some version of *nix

It's not beyond the realm of possibility, but in my case there are 2 things that seem to contrict that.
a) Only with Sentech device? I have a mouse, flash drive and external usb hard drive and never had a lockup. Put Sentech in and boom
b) I use Intel server motherboards. Somehow I don't see Intel making a bad USB driver, especially on a server board.

The only way to test I guess is with different drivers. A bit of further thinking in this, is that maybe the Sentech device is not 100% USB compliant (there is no sticker on it saying it is either) and some drivers allow for slight variations on it while other, more stricter drivers, fail and cause lock ups.

Hi All

I have found this on IPWireless site (http://www.ipwireless.com/subscriber/p1_3g4.html

"
Interaction With Hyperthreading (USB Only)
There is a problem using the USB drivers on CPU's/Operating Systems which have Hyperthreading (HTT) enabled.

You can find out if you have Hyper Threading Technology enabled on your computer by checking the Intel ® sticker on your PC and if it says Pentium ® 4 at the bottom and HT in the top right-hand corner then you have Hyper-Threading Technology (see right)

You may be able to connect as normal, but after a period of time, the internet connection will seem to still be established but no data will actually get transferred. The internet connection seems to hang, so that when you try to browse or send/receive emails you will get errors of unreachable servers etc. just as if you were not connected. After about a minute or so, a window will pop up saying that the internet connection has disconnected.

This problem is not limited to specific motherboards.

The recommendation in this case is to use Ethernet which does not experience the problem instead of the USB.
"
It goes on to describe how to re-install etc etc

OK so it seems to run HT I need to switch to ethernet. Question is how, what do I need (cable, etc) and what is the risks

Thx

nuihc, You can get the Ethernet cable at the Broad Band Zone, depending where you are it in Menlin Mall(PTA) or Village Walk (Rivonia)
