Thought this would be an interesting question if someone was in the market for a hot (warm) hatch.

Both 2011 models; same dealer; 308 GTI lower mileage...

If it was your money would you pay a full R100k more for the superior 6 GTI or pocket the cash & still have the decent 308?

The golf also has 20k more km on the clock. I'd take the 308.

The rules when buying a car are...

1. Do not buy a French car.

Go for the VW if you have any thoughts about getting more than R500 for it when you sell it in 5 years.

No offense man; that's very narrow minded thinking; my previous car was a Renaultsport Clio that I had for 3yrs & performed faultless.

Resale time; as to be expected; it did not hold value nearly as well as more establish Germans though.

This "logic" about (2nd hand) French cars being **** is BS IMO.

*Every* brand has the odd lemon here & there.

Hey, you asked for opinions and I gave mine. No offence taken.

But to clarify, I wouldn't buy a French car whether it was new or second hand :p

Unfortunately the VW is better because of availability of parts and further resale value.
PS I personally wouldn't buy a second hand high performance vehicle anyhow.

The thing is French manufactures is a little bit more than the odd lemon.

The price on both, especially the VW, is too high for second hand with those mileage

Same here, French and Indian cars... Stay away.

Don't know about the resale value, but parts are 75% more expensive, and not that available.

Two people I know have Citroen C1's and the clutches didn't last, and was expensive as hell, R8k for such a small car.

That price is too high, I sold my 2010 Mk6 Gti in September last year for 230k with 60k km on the clock and balance of motorplan. You can get a better deal than that white one.

Three years means nothing. It's practically brand new.
If you'd driven it for 10 years or 300,000km without any hassles then it has some weight.

1st hand Franch cars are also rubbish IMO.
I know of several people who've purchased new French cars and none of them have anything good to say about the vehicles and local dealerships. One guy I know even badged his Citroen C4 with "POS" on the back and I understood why when he started listing all the problems (mechanical and electrical).

Even the South Koreans seem to build better quality vehicles than the French now.
German engineering is still tops.

Take the 308! It maybe French but at least it is not a down syndrome looking Golf.

2. When in doubt refer to rule No. 1.

I love hot Renaults, but beyond those I typically avoid French cars.

Also the GTI is superior in every single way, would take it in a heartbeat over the 308.

Lets break it down seeing as this is a "hypothetical" question.
Hypo : 308
Pathetical : VW

Gti is the better car. Higher demand, will hold its value better.
308 is a good car, if you on a budget go for it. But the value will drop like a rock in another year or two.

Btw what did both those cars cost in 2011 when new? The Golf was about R350-R370 i think.

Personally i would go for an audi s3, you can get a 2007 for about the same price as the 308.

first thing to do is research all the common problems that each car has, then check you can afford what may need to be fixed at some point.

Then you need to test drive the car, try get a feel for if its doing something weird or if its making a noise that it shouldnt be
