I am looking for a microUSB cable for my Sony Cybershot DSC-W520 camera. I have tried the obvious outlets such as Incredible, Computer Mania, Sony, various electronics shops, SA Camera and others. This is Cape Town, by the way.

So far, in my quest for a cable, I was offered microSD cards, etc. As per usual, one has to educate the "sales professional" so that he/she eventually understands what you are talking about. Over the past week or two, I have also bought a laptop and two cell phones. The laptop would have been a new one if ONLY I could find a salesman who knew how computers work. So I listed my options and came home with a used Thinkpad in good nick instead and I have saved a small fortune. The phones were bought after I finally located a clued-up salesman who knew the differences between GPRS, Edge, 3G and HSDPA. So I walked home with a new E63 there. The young salesman who could give me the technical low-down on the E63 secured a sale there and then. His name is Robert Hutchison and he knows his products.

My old camera somehow parted ways with its original box and accessories, leaving me with this quest for a simple little USB cable. I sent my son down to the big mall and he returned exasperated, exhausted, beaten, flummoxed and irate. For starters, having to deal with a sales "professional" lazily draping himself like an adornment over a store counter already gets one hot under the collar. Then to be referred to by said professional, when consulting with his colleague, as "this MAN here wants a cable." English is not my mother tongue and my command of the language with 20,000 words in its vocabulary remains in deficit. I do know, however, that one never refers to a MAN but to a GENTLEMAN.

The end result is the same: they cannot even guess a price although they do have a few different models in stock and they just get rid of the possible sale as soon as possible. Economists read the stars to try figure out where recessions are spawned. It is at the V&A Waterfront's sales counters! Gone are the days of rendering a service with enthusiasm and now we embrace the era where we have to grovel for the right to part with the buck in my back pocket.

Ask them if that phone has Facebook or Twitter, Whatsapp or Youtube on it and they spark!! That is the ONLY "technology" they understand. Oh, and Mxit, of course.

I am a grandpa, grey where not bald, yet I know what the difference between a microSD card and a microUSB cable is! I bought a phone for its business functions and I chat with my young on Whatsapp. But I also know it runs on Symbian, that it can connect to a computer running Linux and that it has usable functionality in the form of an office suite, a PIM and has WLAN if not Wi-Fi (there is a difference) and that it can sync with most PC-based PIM's.

Anyone not knowing what a PIM is, there is Google....................

Meanwhile, if there is anyone out there prepared to part with a MICRO USB CABLE for my Sony Cybershot DSC-W520 digital camera at a sensible price, please do contact me ...........................

Thanks! I have contacted them and hope to get a positive response. I am not clued-up on gadgets but rather on computers alone, mostly in the SMME environment. My knowledge on graphic cards and gaming PC's, for instance, is limited.

My 'rant' was tongue in cheeck but I had to vent a little. As I am a problem solver, the careless attitude of some sales people sometimes may be surprising. Thanks again for your advice!

I'm doing a bit more digging...

If I find something constructive I'll pop it into the other thread.

@dj_jyno..........I think by now it is rather obvious that the Nokia's cable doesn't fit............obviously, that is what I had tried at first but saw that the ports were quite different.

No, it's not rather obvious that the Nokia cable won't fit. Why didn't you just say so in the first place?

It would have been very stupid not to have tried and it would have been extremely stupid to go public without having done the very obvious. Who, in his right mind, will not first look to see if it may fit? I am sorry to say but I found your comments insulting and offensive, over and above being extremely stupid. You really have to be extremeley daft to even think along the lines you do. Do you think all people are so stupid NOT to at least first check if the cable would fit the camera? What kind of people are you used to? I am sorry that I am being abrasive but you have truly offended me with your dumb questions!

Get a life!!!!

Places I would try in Cape Town... Linkqage, Communica, Chaos Computers, cellphone shops (quite a few phones use them, including the Nokia E63).

Are you sure you don't need a mini USB, instead of a micro USB? From what I can see in this YouTube video, that is a mini USB.

The E63's USB port differs in shape & size so it does not the same cable. I tackled Cape Town on foot and had no luck; the sales staff at the Waterfront are not interested and cannot think one millimetre beyond the scope of their training. I am so sick and tired to struggle with things as simple as this when the service providers roll over and play dead.

Sony at the Waterfront told my son theirs is out of stock and could cost up to a thousand Rand.

I understand, but the E63 uses micro USB. Could it then be that the camera needs a mini USB?

If you do phone Sony SA tomorrow be sure to mention this little nugget to them - I'm certain they'll be interested to know what customers are being told by the people who represent their brand!

That's a R30 cable... R100 is pushing it, but I suppose still bearable. R1k is taking the piss.

I wanted to buy a Sony Ericsson phone cash and could not as nobody are selling it - only on contract and I don't use those, so I bought the Nokia instead. Its cable cost R30 I think.

Sony shops are not friendly places.

So it is not a micro USB... dj_jyno was recommending the cable from your E63 because that is in fact a micro USB, which is what you said you needed for the camera. Think you owe him an apology for the tone of your replies to him.

@Quantum Theory, here is a very bad picture of the camera's bottom. The E63 is not a good camera phone and that is why I wanted to buy the Sony Ericsson but could not find one on prepaid. http://www.2share.co.za/Files/CybershotUSBport.jpg

dj_ryno continued after my first response. I really feel insulted by his question as I cannot even remotely begin to understand why anyone would think that anybody else with even a low intellect would NOT have tried that route first. I am not a healthy person and I am really battle weary in trying to find solutions. I gave lots of background as well. His questions made me look as if he thought that I am really very, very daft and not capable of sensing the remote possibility that the ports may have been compatible. I still regard his question as an insult.

Guess what I found in my cupboard? A USB cable that's compatible with your camera. Pity you saw fit to attack me for no reason - I would have given it to you for free...
