I mean i saw one thats 189 gigs.
The reason for the large file which i think is the amount of library files stored.Is this correct.

this is insane..who would want to do this

It will take several years if we compute these tables on single computer. However, the actual time is reduced to a few months with a lot of computers to work parallelly.

Someone who wants passwords...Thats why its safer to 'salt' your hashes. That way, they can only get the actual hash if they know the salt

rainbow tables are used in a time/memory trade off...either it will take you years to crack the hashed password, or you need rainbow tables that contain all the various hash combinations for a brute force attack.

That's a nice way of putting it, but I opted for the simpler explanation
