^ this, we still have a long way to go, before we reach this stage , emotion not playing a part in discourse....classic eg, benefits of colonialism/apartheid --fire might be out, but the coals are still red hot
A quick glance at the comments in this thread show just how raw the emotion still is.

“On the one level, as part of the resistance movement against a system that was regarded as a crime against humanity ... I can justify it in terms of the decisions taken by the ANC and put my political hat on.

“But if I respond as a human being and the fact that I caused the death of fellow South Africans, albeit in a conflict, albeit in an unequal and oppressive society, then I don’t feel proud that I have caused the death and injury to South Africans or other human beings,” McBride said.

So you dehumanise people as a "system" when it was suitable for you, then when it again suitable for you, they are people again.

This monster should be in jail.

All acts of murder can not be condoned. But we have all read stories about apartheid forces' acts of bravery... Killing school children and women... etc... People must not now try to act all concerned about civilians, the apartheid government made civilians fair game during the time. I guess what I am saying is... The murders committed by Robert are no different to many committed by apartheid police against civilian targets...

No one is condoning the actions of the Apartheid police officers who committed murder though, none of those officers currently have cushy jobs in government.... I guess people would rather not see someome who stopped to that level being feted as struggle hero by the current government.

So what moral legitimacy do you have when you are no better than your oppressor?

  • In April 1991, Joseph Khumalo, mayor of Diepkloof (Soweto) and chairman of the IFP branch in the area, received a telephone call late one night asking him to attend an urgent meeting. As he was driving to the appointed meeting place, a hand grenade was thrown at his car. The vehicle slewed to a halt and Khumalo was shot dead by waiting gunmen;
  • Early in 1992, Winnington Sabelo, a prominent IFP leader in Umlazi (Durban), was gunned down in his shop by two men who posed as customers and then opened fire on him at point-blank range;
  • In August 1992, gunmen dressed in fake army uniforms forced an IFP induna (headman) named Fana Nzimande in Patheni (near Richmond) to line up against the wall of his kraal with his wife and their six children, all of whom were then gunned down as if by firing squad (two of the children survived, but with major injuries); and
  • In March 1993, six children of known IFP supporters on their way to school in the Table Mountain area were killed when gunmen ambushed their bakkie, forced it a halt, and then sprayed it with AK-47 rifle fire for some ten minutes.

I am sure the National Party would have been very legitimate if they allowed everyone to vote and be equal citizens. Democratically elected governments are generally accepted as legitimate even despite the atrocities they commit, just give people a chance to vote you out when they are tired of you and everything's cool.

That would only make sense if SA was actually an integrated country at the time though......

That said they actually tried giving everyone votes at various stages but the "glorious revolutionaries" refused to accept anything other than power for themselves.

But would they have gained acceptance if they took the model T approach and said you can all vote for any party as long as that the party is white?

He was lazy/scared and didn't want to get himself killed by attacking a military target, so he chose the easy way out and murdered a bunch of innocent people. I don't see him as a hero/freedom fighter at all. He's just a bloodthirsty killer.

I'm sure anyone killing a politician these days also thinks he is fighting the system :whistling:

Pardons for all!

Difference is those that perpetrated atrocities on behalf of the apartheid regime are not fated as heroes nor do they cushy jobs and streets named after them.

How do you think a relative of a victim or a survivor of the Amamzimtoti bombing feel when they drive down Andrew Zondo Road? We know how the majority feel about old place names that are associated with apartheid.

I am not saying that at all. All I am saying, the outrage at Robert must be equally dispensed to the apartheid forces. Equally murderous.
Post some links to these Apartheid forces planting bombs, mines, killing so called "innocent" people.

Why the need to go bomb a restoraunt with civilians and not a say a police/army/political office/union buildings etc?

Oh wait, easy target.
Because Apartheid was killing innocent blacks including children?
