Okay so I have decided to eat more healthy foods to try and lose weight, now with my breakfast cereal and protein shake (I used to skip breakfast and sometimes even lunch or just get take out) I have started reading the nutritional information, but the problem is I can't make out what any of the stuff means. . .

Like I compared my protein shake with my buddy's and I have no idea if I have a better product than him (I use Biogen Diet Protein and he uses the Clicks no name brand) but the info is Greek to me.

My breakfast I eat Jungle Oats Instant but I don't know how well it stacks up to Pronutro or Weetbix or whatever

These sites are less than useful: Real Simple, ABQ Journal

Please help, I'm not a guy looking to bulk up or get ripped, just want to lose a bit of weight around the stomach and love handles.

I have also started a bit of jogging (5km's 3 times a week)

Cut out carbs as much as possible. You'll drop fat fast.

Firstly get rid of Biogen and any other USN products.BIogen is just a rebrand of their own USN products.
REplace high gi carbs with low gi carbs - dont cut it all out otherwise you will get cranky - Ketosis.
So white rice - brown rice, and no bread at all.I personally dont trust LOW gi bread.
Anything with the word 'Instant' in it needs to go aswell.Rather have oldschool jungle oats as its not processed.

Instant oats - little bit of fibre
Quick cooking oats - a little bit more fibre
Normal oats - normal amount of fibre

But

Normal and quick cooking oats you need to cook.
Whereas with instant oats you just need to pour over boiling water.

I eat Instant Oats but I sprinkle some extra Oat Bran over it.

So I should not use a meal replacement?

Problem is I hate cooking and preparing 3 meals a day is not very tempting.

and "low fat" or "fat free" that just means they took out the fat and replaced it with sugar.

Low carb is the way to go. Refined flours and sugars are bad news. Google Atkins and Keto diets, there are different degrees of cutting out carbs that depend on how fast you want to lose weight and how your body responds to it.

When I first went onto the Atkins years ago I lost 8kg in the first two weeks and continued with steady weight loss at about 2 kg a month for about 6 months.
I then kept a steady weight of about 95 for almost a year. Then the pasta got me again.
This time I have lost 6 kg in the first two weeks and 1 kg in the last month (only been doing it for 6 weeks or so) tho I'm not being as strict as I was in the beginning. I dont think I'll get tp 95 but I'll be happy with 100.

Eat fruit, plenty of it. Your digestion will improve and keep you "regular". If you are in a hurry, about 10 apricots will do the trick, but give it 15 mins

Yeah fruit is sold as a miracle food - but can be extremely calorie dense. Dat fructose

worst thing to do as you're taking in a lot of fructose, fructose is metabolised differently to glucose and in effect can even be worse for you than sugar

Breakfast of true champions:
1) Sugar free raw muesli/oats
2) 1 tablespoon of mixed seeds (this is your protein and fats/oils)
3) 1-2 tablespoon of oat bran (fibre!!!!)
4) Optional additional raisins if you like it sweet
5) Milk/bulgarian yoghurt (or any non-sweetened no preservative yoghurt)
????
6) Profit

Also I like to define healthy eating as: fresh, no or natural preservatives, non-processed

If it meets the above criteria then I consider it part of a balanced diet

This approach on diet is wrong in many levels. People have different metabolic rates, different weight/height and different activities during the day. My theory(not backed up by any study) is to eat just enough and exercise as much as possible.

Low carbs are half the story. You need saturated fats. If you avoid saturated fats you will eat more.

The whole saturated fats dogma was based on - let's be kind - extremely poor science and has been revisited.

Bacon & eggs for breakfast. Good start.

Use Evox whey protein, there are cheap crap carbohydrates in all meal replacements.
