Thanks guys, but you guys have not answered my original question, how do you read and understand the nutritional label?

Read the labels - anything with carbohydrates < 10 is low carb. Avoid all flour/wheat/corn/potato and products containing them as well as fruit as it is very sugary. Stick to leafy vegetables that generally grow above ground. Have as many eggs/butter/steaks etc as you want - don't be scared of fats and oils (apart from artificial/hydrogenated oils). Dairy is good, any kind of protein is good, any non starchy vegetable is good, nuts good. Anything else bad.

Protip: You must drink a lot of water, but don't drink too much plain water as that lowers your blood sugar and will make you feel hungrier. Drink something occasionally with a low gi profile - i.e. Biozest is ideal or heavily diluted juice. Dilute juice to less than 10g/100ml carb - so if it is rated as 40g/100ml carb dilute 4:1

With all the people wanting to drop a few kilos, myBB needs a resident dietician/nutritionist

Reading food nutrition labels is a skill I'm still struggling with. All the data is overwhelming

unfortunately a lot of dieticians and nutritionists are still schooled in the fat is bad and carbs are good myth amongst other things

given that the FDA's history on nutrition I wouldn't take much notice of that. Our own food labelling has improved significantly and the main thing to look for is carbohydrate content
I agree but have you taken a look at that page? Its pretty accurate in describing the lable.

Eat fruit, plenty of it. Your digestion will improve and keep you "regular". If you are in a hurry, about 10 apricots will do the trick, but give it 15 mins

Yeah fruit is sold as a miracle food - but can be extremely calorie dense. Dat fructose

worst thing to do as you're taking in a lot of fructose, fructose is metabolised differently to glucose and in effect can even be worse for you than sugar

so yesterday we had a dip at fruit because of the fructose, however I've just stumbled across this, frankly the more I read up on nutrition the more I realise how much more I still need to read, it's all getting very confusing :p

:erm: a muffin is litterally just a mini cake lol. Nothing but sugar and empty carbs which is the worst thing you can have for breakfast. Yoghurt is fine but only if it isn't sweetened.

My 2cents if anyone is interested:-

I watched the Carte Blanche episode ages ago on Tim Noakes eating plan. I figured he must be onto something so I thought I'd give it a 2 week try:-

I didn't do any exercise, I continued to have my usual 2/3 cups of tea a day with sugar and chocolate after dinner. All I did was changed my breakfast from oats to fruit and yoghurt and my lunch from 4 sandwiches to salad, cheese, nuts (not cashews or peanuts), biltong etc. I lost 5 kg's

I felt great, have no idea what effect it had on my cholesterol etc. Just wanted to share in case any of you are game to give it a try. You've got nothing to lose lol

Thanks for the feedback.

I agree with Winner (#16) as my buddy's sister is a dietician and apparently cutting out a food isn't the best thing to do, she says that you have to have balance, will keep you guys updated on my progress.

Jeepers creepers, wow, but all these studies are really just hogwash. Just eat your fruits and veggies and your sorted :D

It was hogwash studies on carbs that appear to have got us to where we are now, which valid scientific evidence is starting to prove more and more. On what basis do you say these are hogwash?
