I think this is a stupid plan of action for iburst they should have already realised that even if ppl aren't downloading 24/7 they will degrade the service for others if there are too many ppl connected.

Many many ppl would find the price attractive esp if they have no idea what 500mb cap means!

dumb dumb didumb dumb!!!

AS further argument against this I would like to mention the already bad begining of the month syndrome and predict soon no-one will be able to do anything at the begining of the month.

I believe that iBurst will eventually become a 64k service all the time with these sorts of business strategy

It's a good package in my opinion. R299 a month is cheaper than trying to run a dialup. 500mb is quite alot of bandwidth for people who just browse the internet and read their e-mail. I think they can capture a good part of the market.

Well, if they don't take on more clients, where are they going to get the money to expand the network infrastructure, so i.e more towers and bandwidth and so on?

I know two people who have "upgraded" from dial-up to Iburst's I-Go since it was launched. For light internet/email users who also need to access the internet during weekdays, it is the most cost effective and convenient package available. Taking Telkom's ludicrous local peak rates into account, it makes perfect sense. It was costing one of these users over R500pm in call charges alone just to access and send emails during business hours.

I remember several costly incidents when I was using ISDN dial-up of accidently leaving my modem connected (I had infinity call, so left my modem on evenings and weekends). Make that mistake over a 24 hour period, and it will cost you more than an entire month of I-Go connectivity! I find one of the major benefits of 24 hour access is the absense of worry...

Also, I agree that the more bread-and-butter clients that WBS gets, the more likely we are to see better and cheaper high-end prodicts, effectively cross-susidised by the low-end slack.

If WBS just slashed the price of the Iburst modems (to a non-rip-off-level) the uptake of I-Go would, I'm sure, become a flood. Most dial-up users, however, are going to balk at that kind of initial outlay for low-end internet access.

Quite rightly so - I agree it is a nice package and am looking at more interest to this package as opposed to Telkom ISDN, but I want the desktop modem which is too expensive. ADSL would have been nice but after 3 months I'm going to cancel the order and have my phone line removed as well. 3G is also taking too long to come 'live' in my area. I'll try ADSL in a year's time again when there are other options available (SNO?!?)
